Blue Fuel Relay

Just a FYI:

I replaced my black fuel relay with a blue relay as suggested by several sites. I read in several places that if you live in an area that is warmer then you might be OK with the original black one. I live in SC and the weather here, even in winter, doesn't compare to places up north. So I did the ol' salt shaker test and failed miserably. So I would suggest to everyone replace (or at least check) no matter what you weather is. I have not checked any of the others but plan to replace the MFI relay next from the black one to the gray. The only black relay I had was the fuel relay while my stater/throttle actuator/injector were green. I might not replace the green ones unless they fail the shake test also.

Would you happen to have the part #'s and quantities needed in order to swap out all the necessary fuel relays including the other relays you mentioned(such as MFI relays, starter/throttle/actuator/injector relays etc.) from the old styles to the updated versions?

I'm interested into these relays too. I know I can get the blue one from many websites (i.e.: AMS) but what about the others?

It's getting colder here and my wideband shows my cars running leaner.

They are actually available from the Mitsubishi dealer also and they might have in stock. The MFI part number is MR400709 and the blue relay is 8627A024. I did AMS just because I bought some other things there also at the same time. I know SSP sells a complete relay kit that includes the MFI relay and the other 4 blure relays for around $70 - $80. It is on their website. That is the best way to go I think but I never called the dealership and got a price from them though.

Here's the link to the kit from SSP that you were discussing(price is $62.00):

What's the reason for replacing all this stuff again? I haven't heard of a single person who has had any problems with their car due to a faulty fuel relay. Anybody heard of any real life issues, or is this just a hypothetical situation we're talking about here?

I think one of the issue is that the car would under some condition run leaner and there would be no way to fix that thru tuning.

I think I encountered the issue. I leave in Canada and the temperature dropped below 10C which is not very cold yet. But occasionnaly during normal daily driving my wideband would show AFRs in the low 16. And my AFR seams VERY unstable. At idle it oscillates between mid-13 and low-16.

Since the relay are not very expensive, I want to look into that before going to purchase more expensive parts

Ok, so I found a link to the TSB in case anyone wants to read it through. Here's the link:
http://www.sr20deracing.com/looneytu...002_relays.pdf
According to the document, the problem should only occur if the temperature drops below -22 F(-30 C), so for me here in Maryland it never gets that cold. However, if anyone still wants to do this, here's a breakdown of what others have recommended. Go to page 4 of the TSB and you will see that Mitsu is saying to replace connector # A-22X, A-25X, and A-28X with the the BLUE relays(part # 8627A024). Another member on this website also says that your should replace connector # A-27X(which is the Fuel Pump Relay) with a BLUE relay, even though it isn't included in the recall(I guess that's why the kit from SSP that I gave you guys the link for earlier includes 4 blue relays instead of just 3). The Mitsu recall also says to replace the black MFI relay with a gray MFI relay(see page 5 of the TSB). So, you can either try to get the 4 blue relays and the gray MFI relay directly from Mitsu parts dept., or you can go to the link for SSP http://www.sspperformance.com/produc...roducts_id=123 and order the whole kit from them for $62.00.

I would suggest not spending out of pocket for the relays. Just complain of hard starts and show the the tsb and they will replace at least 3 of them. I had trouble with a dealer not even knowing what i was talking about. But i talked to 03chi and swung by his dealer and they replaced them under warranty.

Thanks very much guys! I'll drop by the dealer next week and try to get those new relays from them!

Especially if I can get them for free

Yeah I've had 3 hard starts now, I'm starting to get worried.
Would South Coast Mitsu replace these under warranty if I complain
about the hard starts?

I went to SCM today and they said they had to "duplicate" the problem
before replacing my relay :[

^ghey. as for real-life situations, yeah, we've had a couple cars with legit hard-start conditions that the customers had no idea about the bulletin and once we replaced the relays, the problem disappeared. depending on whether or not you're tuned, there's a reflash that goes along with the relay replacement, so beware. make sure your tune is saved somewhere before going in because they will likely want to reflash the computer along with replacing the relays. thats why i always ask before doing it because i'd hate to ruin somebody's day, most dealerships won't think twice about it tho and it'll be too late before you know it.
