Transmission Cooler

I found this on Mishimoto's site. It's pretty cheap and I'm wondering if this would be an improvement over the stock OEM trans cooler?

http://www.mishimoto.com/mishimoto-u...ooler-kit.html

My car is my DD and I don't track/drag so really no need for a big fan cooler like SSP/AMS (I've never even seen the infamous slow down light). I was just looking for something a bit better than the stock one as my power is increasing. I am also going to be switching to Pentosin FFL-2 and new filter which should be a big help too.

Anyone have any experience with the above item in the link?

you'd be running it inline with the stock oil cooler so pick whatever one you want. and just because it's "JDM" or whatever dosn't mean it's better. A lot of people who tow etc run units that you can get from advance auto parts etc.

So this wouldn't be a replacement but more a 2nd unit? That's not so bad either for $110. I'm wondering if there would be any benefit from it...

question is though why couldn't this be used as a primary cooler?

I think it's being than the OEM SST cooler so I don't see why it's not an upgrade. I don't have the dimensions of Mishimoto's. I'm going to call them and find out. It would most likely be able to use the OEM hoses too. Seems like a decent upgrade for $110.

Given that you're in the same temperature climate as I am. I wouldn't recommend a larger cooler for daily use. Tranny will never warm up to operating temperature.

Yeah that's also true. I get paranoid over trans temps but it's my DD and I I lot occasionally push or drive 'spirited' as they say haha.

In any case, maybe this could be a good option for some people though. It does look like a larger cooler than the OEM. A step up from stock for a DD somewhere in a hotter climate (ans significantly cheaper than the fan system from SSP which is more for track use).

The most important thing SST wise is changing the trans fluid/filter often

a street driven SST will see around 70-90 degrees after warm-up

overheat/limp mode is 195 (or somewhere around there, forget the exact number)

so putting that into perspective, purely DD cars seriously don't need one - the illusion that it will help longevity is neglible/bogus

I have the one w/ the fan, look at the specs for them; neither one will work as "replacement coolers" because they are significantly smaller. I run the HD Tranny Cooler on my crash beam, and it serves me perfectly for the track, so far.
For DD you are probably best served with attaching a Spal fan to the stock cooler. Only Drag and Track going RA's need a secondary cooler.
Exyia, I believe you are listing the degrees in C not F.

I agree. EvoScan says my SST fluids reach regularly that temp (in F) on my daily commutes (mostly when I'm in stop and go longer than usual).

NP. Just wanted to clarify as someone will undoubtedly read your post and think "oh no my SST temp is 180, I'm over heating on the freeway!".
Your scaling is C* in evoscan then?

That's great advice. I really highly doubt I ever get close to 195 celcius! I boot it from time to time but never enough for that.

I will maybe look at adding some kind of fan as aforementioned but in reality, I would have to rig up a toggle switch because in the winter here, I really wouldn't need until the car was really warmed up. Even then, I could potentially lower the temperature too much (which isn't good either).

Good discussion. Glad to clear it up. The Mishimoto unit looked a little larger but I guess it's the fan that would make the difference more than anything.
