3 CEL Codes all the sudden

So I just got my first round of mods installed which are listed in my signature this past weekend. I've been very happy with the quality workmanship of the mechanic and the GST 31.003 basemap.

My wife and I were on the highway tonight getting ready to slow down to take an exit (55mph) and realized we needed to take the next exit...so in Normal mode (Auto) I floor it to get back up to highway speed (70mph speed limit). My exhaust sputters 4 to five times and the car shakes with very little power and it throws the "acs" light on, the CEL, and the exclamation mark service engine big warning in center. I let off the gas and then it regains it's normal driving. No noise, smell, or any change in drivability. The only difference is the CEL stays on.

I park at the next exit, look under the hood and transfer case and see nothing out of the ordinary. I check the CEL codes and they read U0100 P1870 P1871.

I turned the car off for 20 minutes to eat dinner, and when I turned it back on, they all disappeared. Drove another 20 minutes different speeds and they stayed off.

My Question: Should I move from the newer
2009_RA_USDM_BaseMap_BoostPILL_TBE_93oct_V31.003.h ex

to the older

2009_RA_USDM_BaseMap_BoostPILL_TBE_93oct_V30.007.h ex

What is the difference between the two??

have you got the latest recall done? i can tell you personally that the code p1870 is related to that recall, and all those other 2 codes are all popping because of that code

Well, if the recall ROM image were on, it wouldn't be the GST Base Map any more.

So, perhaps we should take a look at that recall ROM, see what actually got tweaked in the SST-related torque calc table(s), and incorporate it into a new GST Base Map revision.

Regarding U0100, did you run a "clear DTCs" after you last reflashed the GST Base Map? If not, that'll be the reason U0100 is there. There is usually a CEL lit up after reflashing an SST-equipped car, as "stuff goes away" during the reflash, and other "stuff" notices.

IMO, there's no need to switch back to an older GST Base Map. They've got progressively more sophisticated as time has gone on.

I was wondering why Mitsu ran that recall in the first place. If this code pops up like an under-bridge troll and scares people, I guess that's the reason!

I never did the recall flash. I didn't clear the DTS after flashing the GST map. So that explains U0100.

I have only had my mods and the new tune for 4 days. The first day I took some test rides where I stress tested it. 0-100, 60-120 WOT, etc... No problems. But they were all in sport mode.

Could there be an issue with Normal mode and giving it WOT suddenly? I'll keep testing today and I hope I don't hurt my baby in the process. : )

Pretty much! It seems that it has been happening to a lot of people recently, including myself.

This morning before I left for work, the check engine light was back on. I went to autozone and read the codes, same 3 from above. For some reason, I get a very small backfire noise out of my exhaust when I let off the gas at around 3-4k RPM. It's looking like I am going to have to spend $500 and get a custom tune. Owell, the GST basemap was free and fun while it lasted.

Does the TurboXS TBE have a known sound related to a single, low decibel pop every once in a while? I kinda enjoy the sound to be honest. I just figured the GST basemap may needed adjusted a bit for my unique car's characteristics.

Tencents, I read that post along with dozens of others related to my codes. (I believe its my job to do the majority of the research before posting my issue for others to troubleshoot). Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I read in multiple threads, the BOOST pill can be installed either way, but the STOCK pill must be installed only 1 way?

It is just a restrictor - no difference in installation needed/no worries.

I think you're right there, as the boost pill is just drilled without any... what's it called... countersink? Mine is the same at each end.

Regarding the popping noises, welcome to aftermarket exhausts. The Base Map (or any tune) doesn't really have anything to do with that. When you throttle off, fuelling either cuts off completely or (occasionally) does a slight trailing trickle of fuel. Nothing really to "tune" w.r.t. the throttle-off noise!

2 Noob questions I've really wanted to ask but I didn't want to interrupt a serious topic.

1. What is knock and how can I tell if my car is doing it.
2. Can backfiring be a result of timing being off?

1. You should definitely be logging! And you should, in my opinion, have a wideband o2 gauge too, for safety.

Buy EvoScan. Select "RAX Fast Logging" mode. That uses a special style of datalogging for good speed and ease-of-use. The GST Base Map has the RAX Fast Logging patch applied to it, so it's 100% ready to go out of the box.

Knock can be seen in your logs - the "knocksum" data item. Knock at moderate/high loads is Bad.

2. Backfiring like what, and when?

Rich

PS. There's NOTHING wrong with getting a pro tuner to refine your tune for your particular vehicle. It's a great idea. I would suggest, though, that you ask if they can take what you have now (GST Base Map) and tweak it (boost, fuel, timing) so it's ideal - and not discard it and put something else on. There's a lot of cool stuff built into that tharr Base Map.

1. <---Mind Blown!! I can start logging with just EvoScan software + tactrix cable + laptop?? That would awesome. I've been researching the two main widebands (aem lc-1) and talking to a e-tuner. But I'd have to wait so long to get my wideband installed, id really like to log before then if possible

2. The backfiring is only at times when im at 4k or higher rpms and letting off the gas. It is very quiet and hardly noticable unless you turn radio off and listen for it.

Burbling exhaust. People pay good money just for that.
