That is probably the best option. I didn't realize you had that many miles on your car. Always good to have to reliable DD and then another toy vehicle. Are you going to have the SST built when the time comes?

Yea, it is 6 years old so 120k ain't bad. I put the manifold in on Saturday. This car is a pain to work on. It seemed like every bolt was a struggle to get to, requiring wobblys, long extensions and flex sockets. Got it done though, and it sounds SO much better now. Seems like there is a bit more power there now that the turbo is getting properly fed (and I'm sure the A/F ratio is consistent).

Now that it's quiet though, I notice the SST makes a kind of rattling noise at idle. Almost sounds like a Ducati, but not as bad. Kinda concerning. I do plan on rebuilding the SST when it needs it, but I'll just do a stock overhaul. I'll probably do it myself. I've looked up pics of it and it doesn't seem that bad. Still gonna be a good amount of coin though, so hopefully that day comes later rather than sooner.

If it is making a rattling noise the damper is probably going bad/already bad. I just went through this with my MR. Once you replace it with the updated version you shouldn't have any problems. I had Kozmic Motorsports do the clutch work. They basically get an OEM mitsubishi damper with clutch baskets and clutches as an assembly and they can upgrade it to a 10 disc. They have a wealth of knowledge, especially when it comes to the SST trans. They have the fastest 1/4 mile SST car and 1/2 mile I believe.

Hory shet

Wow, I see Jack's Transmission sells a torque damper assy for $2,125. Hory shet.

SSP has a torque damper spring rebuild package for $250 but Jack's says they have had poor luck with these rebuilds. Perhaps because you need to cut the housing and reweld it back together?

I don't have any error codes, but if one pops up I'm probably gonna cut the focker open, do the spring rebuild, weld it back up, and slap some new clutches in it. I just spent $8500 on this car, plus a $500 manifold, and it's supposed to be my cost effective DD... I'm not gonna throw $3k into it. I've done full auto and manual rebuilds for a fraction of that price for chrissakes...

Robert, how much did you pay for your rebuild? And do you know what parts ran? Thanks in advance.

I recently had my sst build by kozmic motorsports along with an ets t3 turbo kit. I had to purchase a new torque dampner assembly because mine sounded like a salt shaker. The dampner assembly was like $1200 if I remember correctly. I'm extremely happy with my built sst from kozmic.

Wow, that's pretty cheap.

After watching some YouTube videos of the RA and EVO running, I've come to the conclusion that it's supposed to sound like your SST has a few loose bolts grinding in the trans. Ok, not that bad, but my SST sounds like the majority of the videos I saw.

So, I'll leave it and wait until a code pops up or something catastrophic happens.

I am not sure how you came to that conclusion, but you should make a video of the sound you are talking about and I will make a video of my car from the same angles and we can compare the two. Are you talking about how the car sounds at idle or while driving?

It's how it sounds at idle. I watched the videos below and that's what she sounds like. Apparently it's normal. I also tried shifting into gear yesterday (not park or neutral) and once you're engaged the sound goes away. So I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about.

Oh that noise. For a second I thought you were talking about how it sounded while driving. That would have been a big problem.

I just got back from the dealer and my exhaust manifold is cracked too. Does anyone have one for sale?

I spent several weeks calling around, watching eBay, and posting on forums and couldn't find anything. I ended up ordering one from Mitsubishi Parts Warehouse for $467, $534 out the door. There is a place in Vista, CA that specializes in manifolds - House of Manifolds, Address: 2293 S Santa Fe Ave, Vista, CA 92083. But, I just called them and they don't have one.

Good luck finding one, my guess is you'll have to bite the bullet and buy one new.

I found one yesterday on ebay for $150. I even called to verify. I was busy yesterday and forgot to jump on ebay to purchase and now it's gone. Darnit.

It runs really good, this came out of nowhere.
The only other thing that happened to my car is the tranny. One of the gears malfunctioned at 60,000 miles. The dealer replaced the tranny under warranty luckily.
