Power Steering
Power Steering
Has anyone drained and refilled their power steering? If so, do you have pictures of how you drained it (vaccuum, syphon, drain plug, etc.)? I plan to exchange my fluid with new stuff, but I am looking to use a method proven to work.
if my scanner worked i'd scan you some pics but it's down so here's a write up on fluid replacement:
1. Raise and support front wheels.
2. Disconnect the return hose connection.
3. Connect a vinyl hose to the return hose and drain the fluid into a container.
4. Disconnect high tension cable.
***BE CAREFUL NOT TO POSITION HIGH TENSION CABLE NEAR FUEL RAIL***
5. While operating the starter motor intermittenly, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left + right several times to drain all of the fluid.
6. Connect the return hose securely and then secure the clip.
7. Fill the oil reservoir up to the lowwer position of the filler, and then bleed the air out.
That's taken straight from the books...section 37A-16. For now that's the best I can do without a scanner...if I can get it working soon i'll post pics of the pump assembly and such. Hope this helps.

im glad i found this topic. heres my "noise"...
when my car is turned on and the steering wheel is at rest (ie the power steering is not engaged), theres a "scratchy hum" that comes from the lower drivers side of the engine bay. when the power steering is engaged, however, with a little pressure to the wheel, it goes away.
so, whenever im driving strait, the noise is pretty noticable. not to mention freaky. note also that i've never felt a loss of control or reaction from the wheel tho. i hope its something simple. any help would be great. $$$ is elusive...

btw: my steering fluid looks kinda ok, but it smells HORRIBLE, like its on fire or something. fluid definatly aint the problem here, was your car wrecked?
Bringing this thread back. I have noticed when I turn my wheel all the way in any direction, that I get a squeal. I looked into it. I notice that my that power steering pulley stops completely when I do this. This is not normal is it?
^^ not that i am aware of. is the bearing bad? if you are on good terms with a local shop tell them the deal and see what they think. then you can go about doing hte repair yourself.
Hey guys I have the same problem with my steering squealing when the wheel is not turned. I now know that it the powersteering pump that is going out because it gets so hot that it melted the lid of the powersterring resivior. I orderd a used pump from ebay for $40. My dealer wanted over $700 for a new one. If you pump and lines are really hot after you get finished driving then it probably your pump. the squealing i found was a small leak under the intake manidold. the likes got so hot that it caused a leak and i sugest that you check into this a little more to avoid paying a lot of money in the future. I will let you know if the squealing noise has stopped when I get the new pump on, it should be less than a week. Until then I will not drive my car because the pump my lock up and then burn up my belts and i will be stranded.
Ok I just installed the new pump and the squealing noise comming from the drivers side enging compartment is still there. I found that its the pressure hose has a small leak and thats where the noise is comming from (see pic). I will call the mitsu. dealer tomorrow to see if they can look at the hose and find out what the problem is. Oh yeah my old power steering fluid was almost black compared to the new clear fluid, there is something bad wrong. my car has been wrecked in the front passenger side.
