All the runs are done in 4th gear and boost set at 25PSI


This run is good...just 1 count of knock



This run has some knocks but timing is still ok



This run started knocking early and continued so I aborted it.

So long as knock starts from the lower RPM, the car is going to run like crap all the way up with timing pulled everywhere. That is what I meant by having inconsistent runs...I have no idea when the knock sensor will detect knocks and start pulling timing. Its very frustrating driving the car in this form. I have to say my initial estimate of 80% of the WOT runs being good is out...its worse than that I have the CEL patch and once I see it flashing, I stop the run.

Is it not possible to make the ECU less sensitive to mechanical knock by changing the knock filters?

I was hoping I could get away with this instead of switching off the knock control on the stock ECU...

.

Are you even sure that this is phantom knock?

Otherwise you're just trying to blow up an engine with trying to reduce sensitivity of the knock sensors.

Yes but does the knock sensor still works well for built engines as they do for stock standard engines from the factory? I don't think anybody in their right mind is trying to blow up their own engines so I think some of you guys need to give us that bit of credit and courtesy. Prior to using the stock ECU for tuning, I was on a standalone with no knock sensor. Same hardware and same tuner using the same det cans on the same dyno....I was getting 100whp more previously out of the same engine. The engine didn't blew up because there weren't any knocks heard with the det cans. Now on the stock ECU on the same engine, there still isn't any knocks heard with the det cans but can't say the same for the knock sensor.

I believe I have tried everything possible to get rid of genuine knocks...why are there still knocks with most of them starting at low RPM and low load which affects the entire run into the higher RPM? Am I running too lean? Too much timing? If so, why aren't all the runs similarly ridden with knocks? Some runs have 0 to 2 knocks while some have more than 6. Nothing is changed between the runs...

The interesting thing is that there weren't as many low load knocks while the car was being tuned on the dyno...

I would try to smooth out that timing transition from low load to full load, that is where it looks like the knock is being triggered.

See if that helps.

Also i've found the M3 cams don't like as much advanced mivec as usual on spool transition and peak torque. This will cause the car to knock as well. Care to post your mivec map?

I was messing around with this today because curiosity got the best of me.

This turns off the boost control. The car ran wastegate boost with Periph 0 set to 0x5650.

It also ran 100% off the low-octane timing maps.

It looks like doing this puts the car in limp mode.

Oh whoops I forgot to mention that.

yes it runs entirely off the low octane maps both for fuel and spark.

I didnt know about the boost control since I am on a MBC at the moment.

I used it when I was trying to diagnose some phantom knock issues I had last year (about november I think) but really didnt make notes on what I observed. I had all my maps the same at the time though since I didnt really see a need not too then.

knock disable w/o side effects.

96420008 03-04' evo offset: 1782

94170008 03-04' evo offset: 1782

96940011 05' evo offset: 1382

88590015 06' evo offset: 1382

The memory offset will read "0024" this is knock sensor active

To turn it off, enter "0x0000" this is knock sensor disabled

To turn it back on, enter "0x0024" for knock sensor active

I've run this on one of my personal cars with a built 2.3 AMS engine for many many miles, driven hard on 91 oct. w/o any problems.

With the sensor on, the car knocks before boost even hits. And the car would simply make poor numbers and be a waste of time & money.

I would consider this a last resort against phantom knock. If you know what you are doing tuning wise you will not have any problems. If you are a tuning novice this is not a mod to try.

ok ^ those locations are the "max knock sum".

setting it to 0 means knocksum wont get bigger than 0x24 (36). I am not sure if this is "truely" disabling the sensor - but I guess it has the desired affect.

Interesting, I might have a browse of that code

hmm interesting, so setting it lower but not "0" might numb the sensor a bit?

jcsbanks deserves the credit for this find, ages ago he hinted on how to do it, and based off his hints i was able to find the offset for other roms.
