sputtering with AEM

well i had my AEM installed and my shop tuned it at XS engineering...now the car dynoed at 310 on 16 lbs of boost....they said it sputtered when they raised it up to 19 lbs.....so i drove it around for a while cranking my Blitz EBC up to 19 and 20lbs of boost and it ran fine once it warmed up.....anyways...it worked fine for a few weeks and now i'm getting some sputtering .....i just installed a new Blitz intercooler on the car and my guys say i need to retune...now my problem is getting them to the dyno...they are a very busy shop and mostly work on Honda and Acuras anyways.....they rent out the dyno from XS engineering....now my question is ...is there anything i can do or have them do without having to go back to the dyno?.....the car sputters under acceleration and i pretty sure its running rich(cause of the black smoke on the wall of my garage).......the car takes doesn't start up that easily ..it takes a few cranks sometimes and its not even idling that well right now...it wants to stall after i get on it for a bit..any suggestions....or do i have to just wait for the dyno time...its just Dyno's are hard on your car....and it takes forever for me to get dyno time and its expensive....thanks..wayne...www.pulpracing.com

Sounds like that $200 turbo you bought is defective! Ha!

Wow. A Good $200 turbo set-up, that guy must have been a good friend!

Just pony-up and get Mike to tune it. I told you I'd help defray the cost and do mine at the same time. Book 'em Wayne-O!

Got any log files with it sputtering? If not make some runs and do full logging to capture what's going on when it sputters. That will narrow down what you want to look at and may even make it very obvious what the issue is.

Also: Have you searched the AEM EMS boards? TONS of good info there.

AEM issues

I have had a lot of trouble with start up on my AEM. The local tuner shop called Millennium Autosports has had trouble also. my car runs great once it has warmed up. Any help on this start up issue? I do have the 262 and 272 HKS cam shafts. I also have 650 cc fuel injectors.

Thanks,
eliot

got my car tuned at Tuning Technologies yesterday...those guys are awesome....spent a lot of time and gave me a good price.....i had a bad coil.....it was sputtering up high RPM's.....replaced the coil and it went away....i'm around 330 whp with 20 pds boost....my car still takes a few cranks to start up also.....so i'm not sure with that...but finally my car seams to be running great thanks to Tuning Technologies...and yes only a good friend would sell me my turbo setup for $200

The startup issue is a known factor with the AEM. But can be minimized, if you need help with it shoot me a pm. My car used to take 6 cranks to turn on and now it only takes 2.

Damn right! Although, I'm not sure that guy really wants to claim you.

I'm glad it's running well.

This is from Jason Seibels himself.

Posted: Tue Mar 01, 2005 11:28 am Post subject: Is your EVO cranking too long before starting? LOOK HERE! We have found a setting in the software that is affecting this issue.

Go to Setup/Sensors/cam-crank sensors/advanced then click on the template. You are looking for "Tooth time min" which is in the upper left hand options window. Change this number to 500!

If you are still having excessive cranking issues, look at your fuel under cranking as usual.

Jason.

Send me a list of your mods. Complete list and your AEM File if you want some help. I'll email you back a revised file. Also datalog a 2nd and 3rd gear pull at min and max boost.
Are you running boost comp or relative VE figures on your fuel map?
