How are u tweaking ur aem to get better mpg?
Just a basic approach to the Ijection Timing if everything else in the map is tuned to your likeing would be to make one adjustment and log it. Basically make the entire map -180 do a run, then 0 do a run, then 180 do a run. Note that all tuning parameters are the same(do back to back close proximity runs to make sure all variables are the same). 4th gear start at 2k to redline persay.
You want to compare the logs accross the rev vs load range to see where you are the "richest" per your O2 being logged for the setting (-180, 0, 180, etc). Rich is a good thing in this situation as you are getting more fuel in the combustion process instead of it being wasted on the backside of the intake valve or being tossed out the exhaust while the exhuast valve is open.

For maximum fuel economy, here are two things to focus on
1) 15.5-16.5 AF ratios. Every setup is different but once the engine starts to lean misfire, EGT's will increase, even under minimal load.
2) The EMS should be tuned on a load based dyno, and ALL the load sites in vaccum and mild boost but be dialed in via steady tuning. These are the areas, where most street engines spend their cruising life. We have picked up 8 MPG or more, by retuning some pretty rich EMS's.
If you road tune a car, or use an inertia dyno, it is not possible to accurate dial in each load site, since you cannot hold the engine load at a given point..so you will have spots that are richer than optimal, and leaner than optimal, even if you dont see them on your wideband while, or feel it by the seat of your pants.
These two things will greatly improve fuel econmomy.

Tune higher vacuum load points leaner. Not so lean your have a miss though. See what your motor will take. Tune like that up until -10in/Hg. After that tune a little leaner but not much. After that change how you drive. If you are not in a hurry, dont need to be the first off the light or are not racing then stay out of boost
