AEM of stock ecu..?
AEM or stock ecu..?
I seem to be blowing up these forums with questions lately..
So.. I seem to be having troubles passing smog, and a lovely mod talked to me about switching back to a stock ECU and just selling off the AEM.
To me it sounds like a great idea, but just want more of a group decision, then a decision based on one persons thoughts.
If all I'm aiming for is 450 hp on gt35r/272 cams/1200cc injectors/double pump/e85 etc etc.. could I get a good tune on the stock ECU? Also, would it even be possible to pass smog with antifoulers etc with the 272's that are already in there? If I would still throw codes and have issues, I may not find it worth taking AEM out..
He was letting me know the AEM is for an even more insane project car.. for my project the stock ECU would do..
Let me know what ya'll think!

if all your aiming for is 450hp you should sell your gt35r and your aem and put a nice red on there or a evo green and your be golden, youll make the 450 with less lag on the turbo and you will definitely pass the emissions test on stock ecu
I've been thinking of taking that route for a little bit too.. so the cams won't throw any codes a defouler couldn't fix? I think thats the only other mod besides the turbo/turboback itself that would throw any codes...
I can pass SMOG in my Country on AEM too. I just need to adjust AFR to exactly 14,7:1 (lambda=1) and turn on the loopback control on WB. It is no need to have OBD on any car, they can use RPM pickup from ignition. If you need OBD you cant use AEM. 1200ccm injectors will be very tricky to setup in stock ECU. NO trouble with GT35R or 272cams. May be you can see some code for idle control, but no trouble on running and AFR if you change to smaller injectors or get it work wit this huge pieces.
If you have to do an emission test at all then the AEM will not pass. ( Unless you are in a state or county that doesn't require OBD or you have found a loop hole allowing you to leave the AEM in). I could be totally wrong but most people on here running AEM fall into 3 catagories: don't need an emission test, put the stock ECU back in just for emission, or found a loophole allowing them to run a non OBD ECU but still take the emissions test. If I was allowed to take the emission test, I could easily pass based just on the emissions. However my state rquires OBD hookup so I automatically fail before the test even begins.
As far as just going for 450 whp, and you have to do emissions testing that would require the stock ecu anyway, then just do what silver05bullet suggested.

i have a 2.3 stroker kit and 280 cams. i throw a idle sensor and they only way to fix it is to get the AEM. My ECU picks up too much rattle and throws the high idle sensor which eventullys cuts the compression in higher RPMS. im missing 50 hp beacuse of this. The ems is the only way to get it tuned so i dont throw a sensor My guess is if u take that EMS out u still wont be able to pass.
