Yeah, same here. I don't mind at all a safe tune, but I definitely want to get decent gas mileage when I don't abuse the loud pedal (my mileage has plummeted to around 18 mpg under very conservative driving). Also, the soot, black smoke and stink of over-rich mixture is not desireable or (in my estimation) necessary. Also, I think the unstable idle is somehow related to this condition..... I'm going to get the wide band O2 sensor w/gauge to monitor the A/Fs. I'm also very curious about this automap feature. Anyway, it seems like we could have a rich condition only when really needed.
Manuel,

since you are getting the cams, and the wideband O2 gauge, then we will tune the car better for a bit leaner mixture.
With the gauge wideband, we will eb able to setup the O2 sensor feedback.

Rich smell: well, you have a full exhaust
Also, you are making a lot more power than before. And running a lot mor eboost thus the gas mileage went from 20 to 18. Off throttle you are lean, but in boost you are 11.2-11.5.

With the cams, cam gears, and wideband, then it is a different deal:-)

Tuesday sounds fine for the tune up:-)

That's exciting for sure. Having the AEM adjust the A/Fs with the real time feedback from the wide band O2 sensor.

Well, I wonder how much more the open exhaust should increase the smell?... I know that more power = more fuel consumption, but I notice that my mileage dropped even though I drove one entire tankfull without even once accelerating hard Of course, the whole experience did not take too long since the tankfull did not last long I appreciate your attention to the issues here. Thanks for your eagerness to help out here . Let's talk privately and set up a schedule for the work...

Hi Manuel,

your cams will be here on Wednesday. Tell me when you want to have them installed and the car fine tuned.

Car needs just a AFR retune after the cams. Actually with the cams it will be perfect... That extra airflow will take care of the richer AFR now...

Do I know you?

320 is about right, for turboback, boost control, xede, and cams.
We are finishing a car with JUN 264s this week, lets see how that bad boy will run...

as for the running rich, he should be able to tune that outl. if the timing is pulled out far enough then you will not be able to get rid of the black stuff coming out the exhaust.
This is bad news. If my car does not like timing and I must run retarded, then this means that I'll be belching out huge clouds of black smoke and never see better than 17 mpg

What's the deal with these cars anyway? I wonder whether I'm wasting my time and money doing any mods to this engine..... What coulde be the cause of this pinging? I wonder if the heads have some sharp edges in there or maybe there is some problem with overheating.... I pulled my dipstick out and the oil smells a lot like gasoline. This was never the case before the last round of mods (dp, tp, injectors, pump, hks intake and AEM ems). Is it actually possible to tune these cars to an adequately safe yet driveable state of tune?

Thanks
