Exclamation Running very rich

Well, I got my car back from Boost Solutions where they installed my AEM EMS as well as a DP, TP, fuel rail, 660 injectors, Walbro pump and a HKS intake. What I noticed mostly is that the starting takes about 4-5 longer than it used to (it would start with about 2 turns of the engine, now it cranks for several seconds). Another thing I notice is that the car seems to run extremely rich. I have some big puffs of smoke coming out during acceleration, the car smells a lot like gasoline and I'm using fuel at prodigious rates. I wonder if this is a natural consequence of the mods I've done or whether it should be tuned for leaner A/Fs....
Oh yeah, when AL did a Dynoflash to my car, he noticed that my car did not like advanced timing at all and would knock like crazy and pull timing back. Apparently, George from Boost Solutions also noticed this phenomenom when he was tuning the AEM. I guess I have one of those cars that just wont take much timing I'm running 93 octane Amoco Supreme exclusively so that should not be an issue. I wonder what is going on and what if anything could be done about this whole thing?

Thanks

i have noticed that some evo's can take more timing than others as well.... odd isnt it...

as for the running rich, he should be able to tune that outl. if the timing is pulled out far enough then you will not be able to get rid of the black stuff coming out the exhaust.

Thanks for the reply Wadzii. Yeah, it does seem that some cars just don't like timing. When Al did the custom tune with my car he noticed that the ECU was pulling timing like crazy with the stock maps. He had to de-tune the timing to make the car run better...
I spoke with George a little bit ago and he said that he'll tune the car more accurately on the dyno after I get my cams, gears and IC installed. For now he's set the fuel maps for very conservative A/Fs. He thinks that perhaps when the cams are installed and degreed optimally, the knocking might be abated allowing more timing=more power. I'm also thinking of adding the UEGO with the gauge to allow the AEM to adjust the A/Fs with the wide band signals. This might be the optimal way to tune/run this car.

yeah, if you are gona do cams and such shortly then its a waste to completly dial in the tune with the current setup.

You are right about that. However, I'm wondering if there might be some real value in taking another look at the present stae of tune..... I'm burning tons of fuel, even with an easy touch on the loud pedal I'm only getting 18 mpg.... Before I started down this path I was getting over 20 mpg. Also, there is a definite aroma of rich mixture around the car and the whole rear bumper/trunk area are getting sooty. Maybe this picture can show some of the soot...

I also am running very rich. Tym at Buschur Racing set me up with a very "Safe" tune. I think I will start a new thread asking about the automap function as a method of correcting this.

Yeah, same here. I don't mind at all a safe tune, but I definitely want to get decent gas mileage when I don't abuse the loud pedal (my mileage has plummeted to around 18 mpg under very conservative driving). Also, the soot, black smoke and stink of over-rich mixture is not desireable or (in my estimation) necessary. Also, I think the unstable idle is somehow related to this condition..... I'm going to get the wide band O2 sensor w/gauge to monitor the A/Fs. I'm also very curious about this automap feature. Anyway, it seems like we could have a rich condition only when really needed.
