no turbo for me!

Hey! I just rang Transport SA and was informed that it is illegal for me to turbocharge or supercharge my car!!!!! It's all to do with emissions. The only way to do it is to put an engine from an Evo or GSR in but it has to be the same year as my car or later. Not good. Also found out that the aftermarket clear tail lights and indicators are illegal too. Not sure about other states but SA sounds pretty conservative.

Hrmm, after all the paperwork i had from the WA transport place, they let me do it, only, after i had a certificate from a engineer report and stuff.. tell you what... it may be a tiny bit more expensive,m but why dun you get your car swapped into WA plates n rego, then apply to the WA board.. your allowed to do **** like that.. been done before.

Sounds like a lot of hassle cos I was also having insurance trouble too. I think I will stop spending money on this car and save my **** off for 18 months. Should have at least 10K cash by then and hopefully be able to sell the MR for at least 18K (should have only done around 20 000 km by then!). Then I can check out the possiblity of finding an Evo or GSR (or I hate to say it......a WRX!). It should be pretty easy to sell the MR - shouldn't it?

I don't think what you have been told is correct. I know for the rest of the country, you can turbo or supercharge your car and as long as it is approved by an engineer and it meets all the standards. As for the clear lights they are all approved and meet Australian standards so I can so no reason what so ever that they are not allowed. As for engine conversions that rule applies to every state, the engine must be newer than the car. Getting back to the turbo or supercharger thing, I can not see any justification for it. The reason that emissions might be a problem is just bull, and would not hold up. How can they alow cars to be manufactured in SA WITH superchargers and turbos but not allow them to be added later. If this is the current legislation, I feel it would not hold up in court, so I would at the least take it up with you local MP. I feel that the information that you recieved was incorrect, as a lot of new legislation is not translated correctly by many large goverment organisations. .......................And please do not get a WRX, what a waist of money, if you only knew how they were made and the problems.....

i would ring again another time, and see if you get someone eles to send you out the paperwork on modiying vehicles.

The guy I spoke to at Transport SA was from the modifications department so I just assumed that he knew what he was talking about. He reckons it costs about 6K to take the car and get it checked for emission levels by an engineer at Mitsubishi here. But you raise some valid points so I might do some more investigations. I can't see how these car performance places would survive if all these modifications are supposedly illegal. I guy from RPM Performance has been giving me some really good advice on modifying my car and has given me the number of their engineer. He approves all their work, so I will probably ring him and have a chat.

The RPM guy said they are a major sponsor of the GSR/EVO club in SA so they might be able to track down a second hand engine for me. Might be worth a look.

So what are the problems with a Rex?

There a just so many problems with them, it is hard to create good power without breaking stuff. The gear box and drive shaft are very weak. I was also thinking of getting a rex and realy looked into it a few months ago when the new shape was released, but the problems they are having with all the rexes is just too much to play down.

There's that and how many are there around? SH#t- Loads!
If insurance on ur car turbo'd is worry, I can guarantee it'll be twice as bad for the WRX, and to a lesser extent even a GSR. I was quoted $2200 @ 19yrs for my VRX boosted, and I've heard of 30yr olds paying $3000-4000 for WRX. Seems ridiculous I know, but..
