turbo help

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much I should expect to pay if I want to convert my engine (1.8L) to a turbo. I admit that I am pretty clueless when it comes to this sort of stuff so any help would be much appreciated! Also does this mean that I would have to modify other parts of my car (eg. brakes and suspension)???

From the pricing I've been doin lately, $2500-3000, for a bit of a dodgy set up. Closer to $5000 for a good, reliable setup. Remember to add insurance to your budget, and yes, brakes and suspension need to be looked at. What ever you decide on try to find a workshop which has done the job befor... I've heard a few stories of cars being the workshop Guinea-pig, and not turning out great. U want a proven result.

turbos

Thanks for the advice. I did some research today and the prices ranged from 5K to 8K. Expensive hey! I'm still undecided whether to go for the turbo or just save my pennies for a few years and buy and Evo 6 or something. Who knows?!! How much do you reckon an Evo 6 would go for in about 4 or 5 years? Are GSR's in the same price range? (What is the difference between the two anyway?)

Damn! Sounds like I was too slow to find this website! Maybe some more turbo parts will come up soon???? Has anyone had any problems with running a "bolt-on" turbo kit on their car? I really want to modify my engine but I am also a bit apprehensive about things going wrong! (paranoid, maybe?!) I guess you just have to find someone that knows what they are doing when it comes to fitting turbos. Can someone please reassure me!!!!

The stock engine should handle around 5-7 pound.. they rekon every 1 pound = 10 hp.

it is very reasurring, and i know a few people, who have bolted turbos to thier cars, and have had no problem at all.. you jus gotta do the normal turbo things.. ALWAYS run a turbo timer.. always let the car ' cool' down a lil like a minute after a drive.. more after a thrash.. n don't always thrash it.. number 1 rule... ever..

you'll love driving it.. small boost like 5 pound is pretty different.. and extremeyl fun once you've mastered the capabilites of driving under boost..

Thanks again! I feel better about spending all that money now!!! I just received a quote (using a second hand TD04/TD05 and manifold and dump) for around $6400. This doesn't include a heavy duty clutch though. This guy reckons I should be able to run 6 to 8 psi boost and 120kw at the wheels. Waddya reckon?

sounds like fun in an MR. Almost bought one of those until i saw the VR-X

a local mob up here is offering a supercharger kit for $5k i think it was. 40% gain over stock, and you get that power all the way through unlike turbo. mite be worth looking at.

this is where MR_girl has a bettery ability...

Mr_Girl, in adelaide somewhere is a shop called jap spares ( ran by drift king Denzo maaaaaaate)

they sell superchargers for 4-450 bucks each.. i'd go in there and ask him how much to fit it.. as they have these things on the shelf.

Sounds good. What is the difference between a turbo and a supercharger? Which do you think would be the better option? P.S. what does a turbo timer do? (so many questions!!!)

turbo timer stalls the engine turning off when you turn the car off for 30seconds, then you can set it for for 4 minutes.. just let the turbo cool down a bit..

turbo works from exhaust pressure, takes time to spool up, which is called turbo lag..

supercharger works from a belt ran off the engine so it instantly spools up.

Dunno if that helped, if you need more answers, or better answers, don't be afraid of the search button at the top.. its help alot on things we miss

Have Fun

I feel it totially depends on what you want to do. As mentoned before you can go cheap, and get ok results with more chance of problems, you can spend more and have a reliable system. All in all a turbo is not going to make your Lancer a super car, it will improve the performance but don't go expecting to beat real performance cars. In my eyes I would supercharge the engine, I would go to a good workshop and get it all done there and all new. It will cost $6000 to do but in the end it will be easier to maintain and have less hassles along the way.

I've already done suspension, wheels and brakes. I'd really recommend these first so you have a nice comfortable safe car to begin with. Then I'm looking at a supercharger and LSD to get tsome power and keep it on the ground.

Yes I advise the same, do not upgrade power without doing safety first.
