Jason,

Here are some "nearly free" things you can do to your car.

1) Remove and polish the exhaust manifold

2) Remove and polish the Throttle body

3) Remote and polish the Intake manifold UP TO WHERE THE INJECTORS ARE ONLY. (Polishing past this may cause problems)

4) Not sure if the stock lancers are distributor or direct ignition, but if they are distributor driven, advancing timing

5) Next oil change, replace your oil with monograde racing oil. (It does mean you have to warm your oil to operating temp before driving from then on though)

6) Strip weight from the car (spare tyre, sound proofing etc)

With those ebay things, they are extremely dangerous and could destroy your engine, if they are what I think they are.

They are variable (or sometimes non-variable) resistors that trick the ECU into seeing a different signal from the sensors. So you can tune it to run richer or leaner. The thing is, the sensors are there for a reason - to protect the car.

Yes, Piggybacks alter the sensor signals too, but they do it with a map and usually a dyno. You can't do that with a fixed resistor.

As for the Hyclone things. Great in theory, mostly don't work in practise. They spin the air, to get better swirl and velocity into the cylinders, supposedly, but realistically, your throttle plate, and obstructions inside your throttle body and intake manifold stops the swirling anyway.

I have heard of it working on a very FEW cars, but the majority of them gain nothing. Some even show losses.

Swirling is only of use with promoting a better mix when fuel is added and as you said, at that end if the induction assembly, it all goes to hell anyway. Swirling air isn't good either. If air is spiralling, it's wasting energy going in a direction which isn't going straight to the cylinders. Also, it's entirly possible for spiralling air to cause false readings taken from air flow metres causing an engine to run rich, (a waste of fuel), or lean, (bad for the engine).

Hmmm... one sites between the inlet manifold and throttle body. There maybe some merit but I still think these Hyclone things probably cause more of an obstuction than being of any use.
