Finally got a seatin an Evo VIII
Finally after spending up on the deposit and running arounf trying to find specs I got to sit in the EVO.
The car is here for the Perth Motorshow and set-up a sit and feel today. Luckily I landed the Mitsubishi PR guy and he know quite a bit about our cars.
The car I sat in was full Jap spec but he said there are only small changes.
1) Gearbox of course
2) Rear seats will be slightly different - higher
3) No rear wiper
Besides that it is the same car. The stereo and alarm are still not sorted out.
The front seats are SWEET!! They are softer and more fitted than the MY04 STI. The seating position is my dream position - pretty much the same as the GC8 WRX. The steering wheel is smaller and softer than the STI as well. The seats are black suede with cloth blue inserts - also have brackets for racing harnesses.
The Dash is quite small and neat. From ouot side the car it looks quite linear and boring but in the driving position it is very nice indeed.
The ACD switch was there as well as the IC spray button.
Got to open the boot and bonnet (hood). The boot is the lightest I have every felt. Could open it with a single finger quite easily.
Under the bonnet is all the usual goodies plus the tower strut brace. Under the car there is a small rear sway bar and also a 4 point under body brace at the front.
Big brembos (4 pot front and 2 pot rears) finish this car off nicely.
Any apprehensions that I had about the car before are all gone. Compared to the STI's driving position the EVO has the goods!
Now to test drive one of these things.

Hey THX, have you driven an Evo before?
The main differences you'll notice will be the smoothness of the power delivery and the more neutral handling. In my experience the WRX power comes on big at around 3500-4000k, whereas the EVO is smoother from about 2500k, (but without the big headsnap).
The handling is uber-sharp and with the AYC is much more neutral than a Rex. The Evo 8 will probably allow you to do more crazy **** than my IV does (AYC on the 4 seems to be more of a safety thing than an performance thing - not that that's bad). I don't find it too bumpy for day-to-day use but then i'm probably used to it.
Oh and your Rex will ultimately sound better - but it all comes down to priorities, right?
Anyway, I look forward to hearing about it.

I used to own a GSR, but up until recently, hadn't driven an Evo.
Then there was a guy with a black Evo4 GSR for sale in Coffs Harbour. I'm in Forster. We met in Port Macquarie, and whilst the car was straight away not an option because it was DAMN ROUGH, I was offered a private test drive - just me an my current STi-owning best mate.
Well we took it out onto the dual carriageway and gave it the treatment - and it confirmed every belief I had in the Evo legend! I tell you, it just handled, went, and stopped better than any vehicle I have ever driven. Also took it into a bit of twisty stuff on the Wauchope road. It has made me even more determined to do whatever it takes to secure an 8 in a few months.
So I drove home, minus the Evo. He had 38K on it, but as it was pretty rough, but if you don't mind spruiking for some new interior bits (carpet, dash items etc) and a respray, it could be yours for about 30K. Also, he claimed to be a bit of a rally buff, and that the engine had been rebuilt with Evo 6 bits. I can't confirm this, but maybe someone else could.
If anyone wants further details, just post your interest and i'll pass on his number.

The sound will be the biggest thing that I'll miss from my baby WRX. Such a great deep rumble - but as you say the Evo should make up for that in more places.
When I heard that the EVO was a harder ride than the STI, I was sold straight away. I really don't like the ride on the new egn STis. Way too soft and detached from the raod. My EVO4 WRX has had quite a bit of handling mods done which make it even harder than a standard GC8 - so I am really looking forward to driving the VIII home!!
Neutral driving again... that's going to have to take some getting used to. I got rid of heaps of the understeer from my WRX, but I understand the EVO drives that way YOU the driver wants to.
I am loving that idea.Next time you get a chance out on an MC or Promax track, let me know. I am interested in seeing these things go round.
