Shifting... My Tacholess 1.5

My CE doesnt have a tacho atm, there are more important things to spend cas first

but it kills me not knowing what Rev's im doing, and when i should be changing,

I can take a ruff stab from the sound of the engine... but its not accurate.

so when should i shift?

1st......

2nd @ 40-45

3rd @ 75-80

:s

i have no idea

Also, anyone know how to minimise wheelspin, coz its a ***** for it.

I had this problem with my Mirage which is the USA version of that Lancer Coupe. All I can tell you about the shifts is you probably will end up not shifting soon enough if you just listen to the engine. I used to do that and I am sure that I ran the car well beyond it's powerband.

As for the wheel spin, you probably should look into some "whiteline" bushings that stop the front from popping up under acceleration. If you can keep those front wheels planted longer you should get better grip. I believe the site is whiteline.com.

I had a 1.5L 4G15 engine.

Not sure about the speeds. As for the powerband, I was saying that although I thought the car was still pulling I am quite sure I was well out of the POWER range of the engine when I shifted.

I think a better estimate for shifts would probably be 35, 60 and 90. I haven't had that car for over 2 years now though.

Okay, here is a video of changing from 1st-2nd at 6500rpm, then 2nd to 3rd at 6500rpm, and then upto either 4-5000 rpm ( wihch is around 130 i think), thought i'd stop there, Redline for 3rd must be up around 150-160..

Enjoy..

I change like that every now and then, usually 2nd or 3rd day, or in a bad mood.

I have never ever had an engine problem ( touch wood), but my car is always checked and looked after by my housemate ( who is a mechanic)..

I've had my car since Jan 2001, and its been through a lot of places, and been stripped quite a few times, so i know a quite of bit of it as i'm always playing with it..

[edit] Okay, On a dyno ( heavily strapped), 3rd tops out at 145, and 4th at 190. 5th we did not try, as the poor car was trying its hardest..

I race my little beast as often as I can and I have to admit that I do push the car hard - very hard sometimes I have bounced the rev limiter a few times mainly in first and only a couple of time in second it will hit the limiter at 6800rpm (I'm pretty sure that was what it was it may of been higher ) but with the 1.8's if they are maintained like good oil changes every 5000klm then you should not have too much to worry about

Carby - big metal peice and no computer/afm/electrics, runs on a carburhetter (sp?) to supply fuel.

Fuel injected - Computer, AFM, and lots of electrics.

Yours should run a limiter controlled by the computer. And the Carby is diffintely not better !! You can do a lot more to a fuel injected car for tuning and parts then to a Carby.. So be thankful !!
