Drag race technique question

As you cross the finish line, what is the best way to shut down so that you put the least amount of stress on your engine. Do you put the car in neutral, 5th, leave it in fourth?

Mods, I put this here to get the extended AMS family's opinion. Please don't move it.

Me personally, I just push the clutch in and put the brembo's to work. brake pads and rotors cost less than engines and trannys.

I wouldn't want to take the chance of the engine stalling at (in my case) nearly 130 mph. No power brakes or steering.

Correct^^^^^^^^,by doing so you unload the drivetrain from the engine which is a Good thing

Engine stalling?????,what type of engine managment are you running that would cause it to stall when you push in the clutch after a pass???Nevermind,I just saw your SIG.

Get a chute

That's what I do tho.. I let off the gas for a second or two then pull it out of gear and put the brakes to work.

I usually shift to 5th after the finish. Coasting down in 5th almost eliminates your chance of stalling, and gives you good vacuum for proper braking. It also lets you coast down at a lower RPM than you went thru the traps at.

Its for I.C.E., just as if you were driving down a hill where its illegal to have the car in neutral because it for WHATEVER reason the car dies then you don't have to worry about not beeing able to streer or brake.

A)you are going Straight and B)no brakes?????Did you realize that cars made with power "assist" brakes still function when your engine is not running and you still have at least 1 POwer assist worth of vacuum left in your power assist brakes and even when you run out of Vacuum your brakes Still actually work, just the pedal is Harder to push, that is all...
I do realize that these cars are more difficult to steer without the Power Assist Steering and taking a u-turn at the end of the 1/4 is a #itch, but how fast are you turning off the strip and down the return road? Most people are taking that turn at no more than 20mph anyway so contrary to Myths of not being able to steer or brake when engine is not running you are actually only losing the Power Assist that they both have with the engine running, hope that helps for all who DO understand what Power Assist Means

Yes,I saw that and my reply was not meant to be sarcastic,I did see the word "chance".I know you were just trying to see how everyone else is doing it before going out and jepordizing your saftey or others and that is great that some people actually care about safteySorry for screwing up this thread with the above posts^^
I know you will get a hundred different ways of what people do when they "shut down",just find a way that works best for you.The way that I do it just comes from years of Drag Racing Motorcycles as I,just like the post above my 1st one, push in the clutch so that if something goes wrong in the engine the rear tire/all 4 tires dont Lock up at that speed causing a Crash, and on a Bike at 170 it is even worse,if you know what I mean.Pick what works best for you and stay consistant with it and all will be well.

I put it in nuetral depending on the track, the stock brakes have plenty of power to stop.

Update, just took a regular drive down the highway and shut off car(with clutch in of course) and had 4 full pedal strokes of Power Assist Brakes before you no longer have the Power Assist,so plenty of Vacuum left in Power Assist brakes to slow down from that speed
