AMS Cat Back

Installed an AMS cat back recently. My observations:

The fit is awesome. AMS provides all the flanges and hangers and everything to make it work with no issues whatsoever. My buddy called me up last night all ticked because he tried to install a Megan cat back to a stock cat and it wouldn't fit. AMS provides an extra adapter piece to solve this issue. One issue with the AMS though is it appears to be proprietary. So even though you can get other exhaust components (down pipe & cat) for cheaper, they may not mount up correctly to the AMS. The AMS exhaust also does not come polished, but that's no big deal in my book. I just like how easy it was to hook it all up.

One thing of note is the exhaust came with an extra o2 hole for widebands. Since I don't have a wideband, I had to come up with something to block the hole - right now I'm using an old burnt out o2 sensor. I'll look for a screw or something when I have some extra time.

With the extra length the cat adapter piece provides, the tail end of the muffler sticks out just slightly past the bumper. It does not look anything like the side angle JDM mufflers. It sticks straight out. It's close to a stock look.

It sounds great at idle. I had the car at the dealership a few days ago and even the head mechanic guy there said it's probably the nicest sounding Evo he's heard. It's got a nicer growl. A tad raspy, but not obnoxious. At idle it's quiet.

Getting on it is definitely louder than stock. It's still not too bad though, especially compared to the TBE Buschur exhaust I had on my VIII. That Buschur b1tch was one loud ****. I like the sound of the AMS. At freeway speeds it will drone a tad when you're at higher rpm's, but we're talking speeds of around 90 mph or higher. At 65-75 mph there is no drone. It sounds great.

I've tried a few exhausts and know a lot of Evo owners with exhausts. IMHO, I like the AMS cat back better than anything I've heard so far. No problems at all getting it to mount. It isn't as highly pitched like the JDM exhausts seem to be. The Buschur cat back might be a little bit lighter and cheaper, but I am still happy with the AMS.

I'll post a sound clip in a little while...

The bung is there for the stock 02 sensor. The VIII has one. maybe the iX doesn't? I know mine has one.

What are you talking about???? Every obdII equiped car has one. Please do not post if you do not know what your talking about?? If you would have read the post you would see that the exhaust comes with two o2 sensor bungs which is a pretty good idea.

SPOOLIN why wouldn't your friends megan exhaust not bolt to the stock cat? Is it because he doesn't have a reducer? I'm not too familiar with megan so I'm assuming it doesn't neck down to meet the stock cat. My exhaust is the same way and I was able to bolt it to the stock cat just fine. Tell him the use the stock exhaust gasket and not the one given or it won't work.

The IX's stock o2 sensor is located IN the cat. Odd, yes. So the bung for the o2 on the AMS cat back is extra.

I'm not sure why the Megan wouldn't mount to the stock cat. I do know it was an Evo IX. I'm assuing it was because there was no reducer, but I'll pass along the info about the stock exhaust gasket - thanks.

As far as pics, it's a cat back. What's to see? The sound clip gave a little view.
Here are a few other shots. Enjoy:

Thanks for the movie and pictures. The movie was a little blurry, so the pictures did help out.

in the event you go with our full turbo back you will need that hole for your secondary O2 Sensor. Sorry, I would of sent you a plug had I known you were a IX.

Is there enough slack in the stock 02 sensor line to just move it over to the new hole without any extensions?

Well I finally broke down too and got the down pipe & the HFC. As far as sound goes, I was very surprised to learn there is very little (if any at all) difference between the cat back and the full tbe. I can't tell the difference apart between the two.

The down pipe is awesome! I can feel the extra power when I get on it.
