Deciding on which way I want to go on my next tune? This will be with an AEM EMS. I know C16 will put up the best numbers, but these are nice alternatives for the wallet. Is this E85 craze for real? Any downfall to running it from your experience? How's it on the walbro pumps/fuel sytem? Thanks!

I know they both make good power, but I haven't heard of anyone blowing up their engines due to an E85 malfunction. I have a meth kit on the car, but lost confidence in it after hearing so many problems with them.

How many spots in your area can you find E85?

I have had my turbo honda on E-85 for 4 years now.

with the ethanol it boils off at such a low temp that if it does get past the rings that it will just boil off when it gets much above 70C

When it boils off, where is it going to go??? Its going to condensate on the inside of the engine and drip back down into the oil, and when it mixes in the oil it breaks the viscosity down. I am the one sampling it for him, the results will be back next tuesday. I can't really say what happened yet but I will say this, his oil was very thin and if you are running e-85 you should change your oil every 300-500 miles if your running mobil 1. Im still doing research on how e-85 breaks down oil and I will post the results when im done.

Honestly I dont think you have a problem with E85 breaking down the oil. If that was the case what are all these factory cars using for oil? I doubt they have special rings sets to prevent what you are talking about.

Did you check your pistons for signs of detonation? What about your rods and bearings? I dont think your motor went from E85 breaking down the oil. I am curious to see what you find.

Tim,

As far as your car is concerned. Methanol and pump gas will make more power then E85, Methanol will accept more timing from what we have seen. However I would much rather have the consistency and reliability of a primary fuel system then to rely on a secondary unit.

There are no E85 pumps around were I live, But My truck has "Flex-Fuel", Meaning it is capable to run on E85. I have heard about it breaking down oil in the past, But I don't see how a big company like Chevrolet would do something that could in the long run cost them millions if not billions in problems.

That is exactly my point, I just dont see how production cars can run it with the possibility of oil breakdown. I just don't think that is a true statement.

Well none of these flexfuel vehicles are turbo either, where the blowby is greatly increased. Take a cup of synthetic oil and put some e-85 in it and watch what happens, Then take a cup of conventional and add some e-85 you can clearly see what goes on in the crank case. The stock evo 8 pcv system is way insufficient to allow proper crank case ventilation and thus I belive that this contributes to oil breakdown.
