Redline Time Attack - Summit Point
With great weather in the forecast it was shaping up to be a spectacular weekend at the Redline Time attack. The press coverage included Redline TV shooting for their show and many media crew snapping pictures for various magazines. The Shenandoah circuit at Summit point, WV is a tight, technical, and little scary.
Watching the unlimited cars go sailing at 130mph off a jump and getting 1-2 feet of air under the tires made for some great photo ops and nervous drivers.
We ran this course last year and ran a best of 1:31.4 with our time attack car. Since then we’ve dropped about 100lbs and spent much time developing our chassis. The goal for the weekend was a sub 1.30 run, which we thought would be a good shot at taking the overall win. JIC brought out their new Time Attack/Drift Porsche and right away we knew it would be a battle. The car is 993 GT2 turbocharged Porsche putting out some big power and running sticky autocross compound Hankook tires. During testing it proved to be herculean effort to beat the car. On the straights the car was a rocket, superior aerodynamics, race developed chassis, and big power launched the car from the corners and down the straights.
Mark Daddio kept pushing the car and with him and Bryan Hyse from JRZ consulting on the suspension tweaks we kept getting the car faster and faster. We had about .5 seconds to make up to the big Porsche during practice and we knew had a little more power on tap that I could feed it during the timed session. Unfortunately our chassis couldn’t handle much more power in the first three gears and just spun the tires coming off corner, unsettling the chassis. I fed in the boost in 4th and 5th gears and Mark brought the times down to a 1.29.8! amazing! Our quick time wasn’t quick enough and the JIC GT2 ripped a 1.28.8 with a fresh set of autocross compound tires. In the end we took home the unlimited AWD victory and set a new record for our class, besting our last years time by 1.6 seconds.
Although we were beat by the Porsche we really have to step back and look at the fact that we took a rally inspired 4 cylinder car and came very close to a car designed from the factory for road racing. I didn't realize what a 993 GT2 was until Greg from GSC called me last night and filled me in. I guess it's pretty much hands down the fastest Porsche factory race car made. We can never underestimate the competition and you can bet that we spent the better part of our 12 hour drive home making plans to make our EVO faster. Thanks again to the folks at Redline Time attack for a great weekend and an event that couldn’t have gone any smoother.
PS. I'm still amazed that our beast handles all this power. The same AMS parts that you can call in and order are pushing 600+hp and living two seasons of racing! Our new JRZ suspensions and BFG R1 are incredible also. The JRZ give amazing flexibility and performance and the R1's are easily as good or better than the Hoosiers R6's and last much longer, perfect for track day or race cars. If only BFG made a sticky autocross compound. If you guys get a chance, give BFG a call or Tire Rack and bug them to make another compound for Time Attack & Autocross. Thanks to everyone that helps our racing effort out, especially the guys from the shop and our drivers, Mark Daddio and Paul Gerrard.

Doug, it was really fun and I'm glad your clutch held up! You guys are flying and with some more development time it will be a fight for first.
I'm sending you a care package with a carton of menthol light and a case of Pabst, LOL!!

Martin you guys were up against a car with as much or more power, better brakes, less weight, better aerodynamics and a car designed from the factory to be one of the best handling cars in the world, and were only 1 second behind..........That is very impressive
Congrats, Marty
