Question about your speed density setup....

I'm interested in converting to a speed density setup and i'm interested in your conversion package. There also seems to be some people saying it does make a noticable difference and some saying not. Diirk claims it makes 10-15whp gains on the cars hes tuned. My question is where and why is it that the evo gains this much on a speed density setup? I asked this question on the southeast forums and was told I can get reported for asking this simple question? I was not slandering awdmotorsports in any way or form and I actually will be purchasing a few parts from your company and like the success you have had with cars you built. Just would like to know before I buy

Well - consider what you remove from the intake -----

ALL that honeycomb adds up to restriction.

Secondly - You can often run bigger intakes because you dont funnel down to the small stock mas.

Third - I think SD tuning actually provides a more accurate tune then with a MAS.

I could be wrong - and im sure AWD will get on and correct it.. but this is what my reading/research has reviled.

I've thought of that but that doesnt add upto 10-15whp, or does it? I'd like for mike or diirk to chime in and give me the professional explanation.

Consider the cross section that is the stock mas - And the actual area that 7.06 inches.

Now consider that (I have my mas sitting in front of me as it went bad and I am switching it out)... the edges cevel in from that 3" diameter, much of the whole top is blocked by the plastic shroud, and the honey comb.

I am willing to bet 35% of that 3" diameter is blocked from what would be a free flowing pipe if you were SD.

So if you were to figure 35% out of a 3" pipe.. consider trying to run your SD setup on a pipe with 4.6"^2 of cross sectional area.. or a diameter of 2.3"(58mm) ... smaller then the stock turbo inlet.

Again these number are all estimates -- but looking at a mas - you can easily see where I am coming from.

So i finished the SD tuning on evo 8 yesterday. Fully bolted on evo 8 with cams and some ported stuff. The car previously made 440 on 93 on MAF control. After the tune yesterday, it ended with 451hp. this was at same boost, same AFR and same timing. The test was not done on the same day, but in our dyno bay, the temp is 95+ every day.

Im attributing the gains of SD to be from the removal of the MAF's restriction in the intake pipe itself. Less turbulence in the intake allows the air to enter the turbo more freely. Aside from that, i have noticed that its allowing for more accurate tuning. On a car i did not too long ago on e85, i was able to literally make the wideband freeze at my desired AFR. I tuned it to 12.0, and when the car hit boost, the wideband read 12.0 and did not change until lifted off the throttle. It does that every single gear. This particular car made the same power as it did before on 3 psi less boost.

Thanks for the reply diirk. Have you been able to get rid of the 3800rpm lean spot using sd? If not, how does that affect the car when accelerating and could it cause future problems?

I have seen this little issue on the cars i have done. I must correct you though, its not exactly a lean spot. The wideband reads 14.7-15.2 and the stft is still in check when it occurs. It happens at very low speeds in higher gears. For example driving in 5th gear at ~40-50mph in 5th gear. (2-3k). the car has little hiccups, like mini fuel cuts. You can see it in the logs as well, the IPW's are jumping up and down. I have yet to find a fix for it, but i also do not have the time to spend on these cars to try and get to the bottom of it. Im hoping to have my personal car up and running and switched over to SD in the coming weeks, so i should have plenty of time to play with it. Personally, its not something that would bother me. I dont ever drive in that area anyways.

this is the only reason why i would not convert completely over to speed density. might sound rediculous but i'd like everything to run perfect on this setup before i switch over. when this gets figured out, I'll switch over. main reason is because i also use my car as an dd. thanks again for taking the time to respond to my questions as I know you guys stay very busy btw, like the shop pics and congrats on the move!
