How Illegal would this be?

Just wondering how illegal this would be if you were caught, or if anyone actually believes this would work....it was suggested by a guy I talked to at a friends garage.

Go down to Buffalo or Detroit and pick yourself up a brand new Evo 8. Find a junkyard or willing person who owns an US Lancer in an identical colour and strip all the VINS from his car and put them on the Evo 8. Door jams, dash, engine bay etc. Bring the car up to Canada and claim its an OZ Lancer.

What do you all think, I'm kind of skeptical, but then again if all the VINs match up to a US Lancer then how would a customs guy know the difference? A friend of mine brought up a 02 Eclipse a few months before Mitsubishi openned up here and they did the regular check of the car and she ended up having to put on a Daytime running light sensor to have it Cert for Canada. Now obviously you'd have to do that.

I was just curious if anyone knows anything about what goes on at Customs/Inspection? And if this would work.....not that I'd try it or anything

if they do a really thorough(sp?) search of the car, like checking all #s, you can't do that. The VIN #s, if called into mitsu, can find your serial #s of the car, like the engine serials and such, if they mismatch you may lose your car if they wanna be asses, but either way its super risky and of course illegal.

EDIT: VIN #s dont tell the color of the car

Yeah, man, you DEFINITELY don't want to try it now.

But it all depends on your poker face/acting abilities - how well do you think you could pull it off? LOL

Ok first off I said "I wouldn't try it" 2nd I can't afford an Evo 8 to begin with much less the duty and taxes I'd pay for bringing in a car to Canada.....!!!!!

Finally If I really wanted an Evo 8 I'd just rent a cheap apartment in Buffalo, get NY plates and drive it around up here and claim my permanent address as the USA. And that is perfectly legit.

As far as I know you can drive the car in Canada just not register the car as it is there. Wouldn't it be easier to have that same willing person just register the car for you. You bring it to Canada and simply use it there. Seems much easier to me. Probably not illegal but I really have no idea. Keep the shiny side up.

Thats called retagging a car, highly illegal, and if someone tattle tales on you, you be in deep ****. Although you didnt steal nothing, you have to prove you didnt with receipts and such, but its more of a hassle. Maybe find yourself a gal in the states to buy it for u =)

After checking the EVO VIII is NOT on the import restricted list. which means you can bring over a EVO VIII. now insurance is the question.

I wish you much luck with the girlfriend search spool... because you'll need it.

As far as why, I think it has to do with the legal requirements that all cars have to meet. It doesn't meet all the requirements, but it can be modified to do so. Selling it retail means all of them have to be changed at the retailer/wholesaler's expense, which is probably why Mitsu won't do it yet (but probably next year).

Then again, what the hell do I know? The government here's on crack and want to crack down on any modified car. So maybe it's Mitsu waiting until the government makes their move.

So basically we CAN import the thing, we'd just have to modify the front bumper to bring it in here.....BLAH. And since it's the front bumper that needs to meet standards, you'd probably have to crash test the bumper to see if it meets standards, which essentially means you need to buy 2 evo's one to crash test and one to actually BRING into the country.

Might as well be banned
