Don't live in The Great White North, but just a few minutes south of it :]
My thought is that they are maybe prepping to re-enter the WRC? Look at the Scoda and Citroen and Ford. they are the teams that are dominating right now and that is the reason the older Subies were changed to the present model. Shorter wheel overhangs which alters the moment of inertia and allows for better handling in the dirt. For Subaru in the WRC it was a classic case of "if you can't beat them, Join them". They were the last of the major players in the WRC to abandon a classic 4-door saloon shape.
My guess is the front overhang would be shrunk a bit before production., but look at the silouette of the Subie, Citroen, and this and I think you will find they are 'all in the same family".
Just my 0.02
Tom (and if you don't like it, well, ... "Take Off, eh?" )

though it seems the changing tide for diesels coming to north america- the audi r8 is going to be offered with the turbo diesel engine that won 8 out of 8 races in audis race car. The bmw 335d twin turbo diesel with over 500 lbs of torque is coming to the states, 2 versions of audis diesel motors are being released in seperate vehicles such as a5 and q7, and the new jetta/golf is being offered with diesel. My next car is without a doubt a newer enviromently friendly common rail diesel- just not sure which car yet.
