Spool's Swap Update

Hey I just got this back from Dave at RPW:

The 6A12 DOHC Mivec swap is a fantastic swap and believe me when I say - very easy. For example I do the complete swap into a Lancer vehicle for $7000.00 AUD$ including a Haltech computer and labour so this is around $3500.00 US$.

We could supply a complete motor that has been partially stripped, gaskets and seals replaced, timing belt and tensioners, our custom header and dump pipe kit for this specific conversion, engine mounts, Manuel gearbox for around $5000.00 AUD$ plus freight of approx $550.00 sea freight or $1000.00 Air Freight.

(Prices in AUD$ of course).

We could also supply a Haltech programmable computer for $1850.00 AUD$ with wiring harness and all sensors required.

This is of course the best option - but turbo charging this motor whilst in your car is not an option due to the severe lack of room that would be left.

If you want to go turbo then stick with the motor you have an bolt no one of our turbo kits with a modified motor and you would have an even more powerful motor.

These are basically your options - personally the turbo on your car is a better option of all out power.

The DOHC 4G94 Mivec set-up we are still trying to do but no success on this yet.

1) The swap sounds like it's Honda-swap easy and seems like you get a lot of stuff for a reasonable price (about $5000). The engine is rated at 150 kw or 201 HP.....about 170whp I guess.

2) Dave is off the opinion that turbocharging the 6A12 isn't possible because of space. Here are two pictures from the site showing the swap:

http://www.rpw.com.au/Photos/car photos/CE Lancer FTO Conversion/6a121.JPG

http://www.rpw.com.au/Photos/car photos/CE Lancer FTO Conversion/6a122.JPG

Notice the space on the right-hand side of the Motor.....O.K. now I'm not engineer and I don't like comparing apples to oranges, but I know of several cars that have fairly simplistic short Turbo set ups...essentially intake, piping, turbo, manifold etc.

Take this shot of a supra engine for example:

http://www.to4r.com/members/media/spatel_engine1.jpg

See the left-hand side turbo set up....that looks like about the same amount of space as the right-hand side of the Mivec.

Anyways my idea.....custom turbo set-up made in the same way that the Supra is set up. True the supra engine is mounted front-to-back, but with the manifold being right there on the Mivec, I really believe it's possible.

Any comments on the swap or this turbo set-up idea?

p.s. Maybe if the turbo thing really won't work I'll have to change my name to "I Love N/A" or "I Love All-Motor"

Letr me get this straight.....you want to swap in the 6A12 then turbo charge it. if you can get it to fit, it would be amazing.

Correct....and according to Dave @ RPW the 6A12 swap is easy, but he thinks their's not enough room for a turbo.....I think that If I have a custom turbo kit made in the same style as the Supra's it would fit. Compare the picture of the Lancer engine bay with the 6A12 and then the Supra engine bay.....they're is the same amount of space....

Jeff, remember that the supra engine is longitudinal whereas the fto engine is transverse. this leads to a completely different turbo setup and makes it a lot harder to make it fit. with the longitudinal setup you have tons of room on the sides to fit turbo manifolds, intercooler piping, and downpipes, not so on the transverse. though i did see a jetta with a vr6 motor twin turboed!!! that's what i think you should do is twin turbo!! now don't get me wrong, i think that it is possible to cram 2 turbos in there, but a lot of work and labour costs to get it done. hehe.

i may wait to see turbo numbers from the new 2004 ralliart mivec. common sense would tell me that if the non-ralliart model will have a 4g94, then the mivec from the ralliart would be a easy swap into our cars. now to wait for some numbers.

the 2004 Mivec will fit into the regular lancer.

with a base of 160 HP at the crank a turbo could feasibly put down 200 at the wheels with little work. IC, some internals work you may start looking into the 225-250 range with some ease.

first off, remember that a turbo upgrade will give you around 170 whp as is on our 4g94, the mivec gets 170 w/o turbo.. already a good swap... plus the turbo you add onto the mivec would probably be small.. and add about 30-40 whp as is? But I dont know what other kind of upgrades you can do to a mivec along the N/A setups to get more power out of it... you could always get a turbo for our engine for less than 5k, and still do a little more upgrading from there too...

BTW, arent all twin turbo setups on 6cyl and up? Running a turbo on 2 cyl at a time would be mad scary though.. I would think that our exhaust output wouldnt be enough to spool up 2 turbos at the PSI that you would want?

The 6a12 Mivec is a V6....

Crash, true the supra engine is longitudal, but that gap on the right side of the engine bay in that lancer looks big enough to fit piping and a turbo.....the manifold is on the rear of the engine if I remember correctly.

I'm sure the new Ralliart Mivec is great and all, but I love the pull and feel of a V6, not only that but the reliability on the 6a12's are good from what I've heard...solid block and stock internals can take a lot of boost. I think the biggest draw though is the fact that you can bore out the 6a12 to 2.5L from 2.0....whereas the new ralliart engine is a 2.4L. Same displacement but fewer cylinders.

I think the final thing is the cost of the engine....how much is it going to cost for a brand new 2.4L 4 cyc DOHC Mivec from Mitsubishi? Factor in swap costs and the basic bolt ons and you're probably looking at a small fortune.....don't forget the R&D time for the new engine.....it'll probably take a few months for an intake to drop and longer for headers and other bolt-ons.

I think I'd rather be unique and go with the FTO V6 and try the turbo, rather than pioneer swapping the new Mivec engine in my lancer and wait for parts to come out.

we will never know as the 2.4L is a SOHC Mivec engine. I see your point on engine costs and a 6a12 is an attractive option.

Your kidding me....all this hype and hoorah over a 160hp SOHC engine....Mivec or not.....SOHC is always bad news in my books for moding a car.

not kidding, joking, joshing, fibbing or lying. 2.4L SOHC Mivec engine in the Ralli///Art version. If I were you i would continue on the path you are heading with the swap of a 6a12.

Enjoy and keep us updated.

Yep, either swap that FTO engine in, or wait for RPW to give us a MIVEC head. I don't see a point any more in swapping the 2.4 since it's still only got one cam.

RPW "The DOHC 4G94 Mivec set-up we are still trying to do but no success on this yet." He said maybe 2-3 more months....and thats if it works.
