"Early VR-4′s could crack the sixty mark in about six seconds, which was fairly fast for the time. The problem was that all that technology didn’t come for free: the VR-4 was one heavy sonofa*****. Even the early VR-4′s weighed in around 3800lbs, which is a lot even by today’s standards. The heavy turbo sideways V6 also meant the VR-4 had a much more pronounced front weight bias than competitors like the Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, 968, and Corvette, resulting in rental-car understeer when you pushed it really hard. "It still offers great performance, but it is by no means a great performance car."

Do you think it was it worth the $45,580 sticker price 1996? Adjusted for inflation that is the equivalent of $66,841.04 in 2013.

I get all that, but it isn't always about 0-60, 1/4 mile and track times. Mitsu made the Evo to be its ultimate form of performance. It (the 3000GT) was a 2+2 GT. The 300ZX and FD didn't offer that in turbo trim. It was more comfortable on the highway. So it ended up selling more. Ironically, it is the same argument Subaru guys like to make about their cars when an STi gets spanked by an Evo. The 3000GT is a better daily driver and far more versatile. It didn't need a rebuild at 60K miles or catch fire like the FD. It wasn't as expensive as a Supra. And it was on the market after they were all gone.
Mitsu is pretty cozy with both Nissan and Hyundai. I would like to see them do some sort of AWD coupe using perhaps some sort of amalgamation of their own AWD system with ATESSA-ETS with a longitudinal based chassis in a 2 door coupe. But I imagine this would again be a halo vehicle making it around 50grand. Being embarrassed will be the furthest thing from their minds.

Apparently this lancer is hitting a couple on a bike. *Aside from that news, is this the new lancer or is this an already existing car in Asia?

EDIT, comments reveal it's a Taiwan based lancer.

A note of regret
Two months without a single post.
I look at the first post in this thread, Oct. 2011. Nearly 3 years later, we don't seem to be much closer to fruition. I wonder, have we been having a hallucinogenic experience worthy of the sixties?
I don't know, perhaps I should wake up from waiting (past two years), buy an A45 AMG and be done with it.

well, don't expect any news soon. there is going to be a 2015 model year:

I am sure they are way too busy readying the next Lancer launch.

In the U.S. yes.
In Germany the X is not shown in the model line up since 2013. Same in Greece, where I live. In the UK, only an anniversary edition was made available in 2014, 40 RHD cars that were all snatched at GBP 50,000, $84,888.
You have it good in the U.S.
As for the rest of us...

"Mitsubishi has confirmed..."
so it has ha? to who, when, where is the link to the announcement, was he told by a little birdy?
The projected release is for 2016, and there are many things they are still nutting out including whether they will go with the new Lancer platform or not.
They're not planning all electric, it will be a hybrid. The most exciting platform they are working on is petrol driven to the rear, electric front wheel drive. But then there is another one that is very similar to what Porsche uses with the 918 Spyder. They are playing with a few ideas at the same time as far as configuration goes. The only one that they seem to have dumped now is the Turbo Diesel idea.
There are 2 current possibilities as to what eventually replaces the Evo, and within those two possibilities there are at least 2 options as to configuration. A lot of which way they swing will depend on their very close observation of Hyundai and Toyota in the WRC.
2016 is the target, but that should be taken with a grain of salt along with a lot of it at this point as Mitsubishi has a string of projects that were stopped at the 59th minute of the 11th hour. But they are working on this with a view to production as it has been told to some Dealers that it is coming, and the Miev Evolution Pikes Peak *** kicker IS their development test bed.
The 2015 model Evo X will be released at the end of this year, and will be the last X made

I am just going to put this here. Some rumors.
The next mitsu sports car will not be lancer based. It will be a TWO door model and hence will not carry the EVO name tag. There is a good chance it will be the return of the Eclipse
It will be hybrid and possibly rear engine, somewhat like a Lotus platform.
Given that 2015 cars are starting to roll out, yes it will be a 2016 model.

The Eclipse is a different project. There are several working prototypes and pictures are all over the net. I would be surprised if that is not put into production to be honest.
The information I posted is directly from the people involved for what that's worth.

I would have to believe that Mitsu is working on something. They have put a lot of time and effort into their Pikes Peak Miev Evos over the last few years to just use that research as a marketing campaign for people to buy a Mirage and/or Outlander. They have something cooking, they just aren't very forthcoming with info to the public.
