AWD comes to NHRA's Hot Rod class!

In an historic decision, NHRA announced today that All-Wheel-Drive, 4 cylinder platforms will be permitted in the Hot Rod class. The change marks the first time since the series’ inception in 2001 that anything other than a FWD vehicle may compete in Hot Rod.
“The AWD platform represents a significant part of the Sport Compact market,” said Competition Director Jim Skelly. “They are already permitted in the Sport RWD class, as well as Modified class. However, we see a realistic need to also have these cars represented in a heads up, unibody class like Hot Rod.”
Minimum weights for AWD applications are:
1 power adder, 2,400 pounds.
2 power adders, OEM trans case, 2,500 pounds.
2 power adders, aftermarket trans case, 2,600 pounds.
“These weights are representative of the actual weights of cars already prepared for competition,” said Skelly. “Right now we’ll just keep one set of weights for all AWD vehicles. If we need to expand the weights by engine type, as in the rest of Hot Rod, we can do it. These rules are designed to give current AWD cars an immediate opportunity to participate in the remaining NHRA Xplod Sport Compact Racing Series events for 2005.”
Turbocharger rules are also being adjusted, so that current AWD cars may compete in NHRA with minimal changes. AWD, 4 cylinder, applications are permitted a maximum turbo size of 78 mm, where the maximum compressor housing inlet diameter is 79.78 mm or 3.141 inches. (The rest of the class is restricted to a 70 or 74 mm turbo, depending on engine type) All other current turbocharger rules for the turbine housing and the inlet flange apply.

If those EVOs and STIs can't run in the low 8's they should even bother trying to compete in the NHRA hot class.
That is just a marketing trick to get people to race anyway. Sport RWD doesnt get enough people as it is......
