Do 5SPD IX's Have To Shift Into 5th?

How many of you 5speed IX owners shift in 5th gear in the 1/4 mile?

Have any of you guys left it in 4th?

Unless you are trapping around 118 or so, you should be able to trap in 4th. I think the IX 4th hits the factory rev limit at about 117 or 118. A guy off another forum just raised his rev limit and went through the traps at almost 120 in 4th when he ran a 11.5 on stock turbo. After his 35r upgrade 5th was needed.

7550 is lower than stock.

Whether you have to shift to 5th or not depends on how fast your car is and how high you're willing to rev.

I think the only bad thing about staying in 4th gear past red line is that you are no longer in your power band but then again if you shift into 5th then you loose that extra time into shifting. I am actually thinking of putting on 235/50/17 for this.

Yes, it's 7606. You shift at 7k until 4th gear, but then you hold it out.

So if I were to shift into 5th gear I will run a slower time? What if I shift fast into 5th?

Going pass 7k isn't good because our cars don't make power up there. Another thing our 5th gear is a overdrive and is weak.

you will take longer to go into 5th than you will to run out 4th.... you are making more power in the top of 4th then you are in the middle of 5th

Like I said before, it depends on how fast your car is (how high the traps are), but usually the shift costs you more time than it's worth.

The "What if I shift fast into 5th?" part gives me a chuckle. That's the slowest shift possible, and 5th is a dog for the most part.

There's nothing wrong with going past 7k - we still make good power. You make as much at 7500 as you do at 6000, but you don't avoid 6000rpm do you?
