Disapointing 1/4 mile times
I finally got to the dragstrip today and was somewhat disapointed with my et's and trap speeds. Granted, the Commerce dragstrip is 1200 ft above sea level and the temperature was very hot and humidity was high (I don't know for sure but it felt like the 90's)
My car is stock except for a 3" catback. I got to the track with the low fuel light on, so I guess I had a couple of gallons of 93 octane in the tank. I added 3 gallons of 104 octane unleaded gas (at $5/gallon
). I removed the spare, jack & lug wrench and left the floor mats at home.
Granted, this is my first time out with the car and my driving sucked, but I was not happy with the results.
I managed a best run of:
60' --1.901 (worst: 2.5220)
330 --5.929 (worst: 6.283)
1/8 --9.18 (worst: 9.671)
mph-- 78.43 (worst: 78.35; best 80.06)
1000--11.968 (worst:12.428)
1/4-- 14.286 (worst: 14.727)
mph--97.19 was the worst (best: 97.91)
I'll have to admit that I never go a decent run the whole night. I bogged twice on the launch and missed shifts in every run
I think that If I had been able to pull a decent run with no missed shifts, I might have gotten a very high 13.XXX
Still, those trap speeds tell me that the EVO has less horsepower that my supercharged Integra GSR had. I managed a 14.145 @ 99.3 mph out of that car. I'd say the EVO with the cat back is probably .40 seconds or so quicker than my WRX with a 3" turboback exhaust....
I know I need a lot of improvement in my driving, but I sure wish this car had a few more ponies under the hood. I guess I'll get working on the SAFC-II and the MBC... Maybe next time I'll make a better showing...
On the positive side, several people commented on how nice a car it was, how they were happy to finally see one race, etc. Lots of folks came to look at it and nobody was in the least negative about it. Even the Mustang and Camaro guys were very impressed and interested...I was probably the most negative person on the EVO tonight.....
Well, maybe next time......
BTW, there was a guy there with a DSM eclipse running mid 13's... He had something called a DSM Link and he was sitting right there with his laptop changing all kinds of maps and stuff in his car.... When are we going to get something like that? BTW, he was quite sure I'd get in the 13's... I'm sure glad I did not go in there bragging about it. I did say that I hoped to get low 14's and would be thrilled to see 13's... At least I did not end up looking like a total fool

All I can say is don't go bragging and trying to put down Hondas with your stock EVO, lots of them (blown or sprayed or even all engine ones) will hand you your *** in a platter....

Huh? WHen did I put down a Honda?
The Evo is no drag car, but with a good driver it can turn some impressive times. I know the stockish Evo will get it's *** handed to it by a lighter FWD car on the highway. I have owned FWD DSMs and AWD DSMs and they were all faster than my Evo. The Evo isn't just a straightline car.

i ran 13.6's stock.. but i didnt know how to launch my car then, since i was still getting used to it..
now i think i should run high 12's, but have only mustered a 13.1 on a timeslip.. but it was 95 and thunderstorm humid when i ran..
work on ur launches.. i finally grew some ***** at the very end of my last time at the track and launched at 5k, which worked awesome when i almost just dropped the clutch! if i slipped it that high it would just burn the clutch and i'd go nowhere.. it takes a little getting used to..
now that i have it down pretty good, i definitely think ill run a 12 next time i go out! hopefully it'll be cool and dry, so i can run a nice 12 too... and that's still with stock downpipe and stock cat!

I guess I'm thinking of all the stupid Honda bashing posts one reads in forums like this and I was still a little bummed out by the EVO's disapointing power output....
Of course, the EVO is not just a straight line car, It's actually more than a sum of it's parts. I was very impressed with it when I bought it and I'm still impressed with it overall. My disapointment was in the power department. I guess I expected more from 271 hp... Oh yeah, the driver also makes a huge difference whether at the dragstrip or on the track. I was only comparing my own driving in different cars....

I tried different ways to launch and I bogged a couple of times and slipped the clutch once. I did get one clean launch (the best one I posted) but I managed to miss the 1-2 shift pretty badly. I know that I need to work on my technique but I'm still unhappy with the power output.
Actually, what I'm afraid of is that I got one of the slower EVOs, you probably have one of the fast ones... I guess it's the luck of the draw.... It was the same with my WRX, I was not impressed with it's power either compared with my supercharged GSR...
Right now I'm running pretty much stock except for the catback. Last night I saw my harness had come in so the SAFC-II is probably not far from getting installed. I'll be able to see them what the boost is doing and maybe run better anyway because of the fuel trim by the AMS settings... I'm thinking maybe all I need (in addition to better technique) is the MBC & SAFC.. of course, I need to get my gauges in first... No need to cause damage....
I just went to the stip last night and this morning...the track i go to is unfortunately on a slight uphill.
just 94 octane did not take anything out of my car was definitely hot and humid, and this car is definitely the hardest to figure out launching out of any car i've had...
on a .500 tree My very first run with a ****ty reaction time of 1.1 b/c i wasn't lookin at the tree i ran a 13.8 at 99.98
later that night i tried a couple different ways to launch got mostly arnd 14.2 had some other 13.8s and over 100
this morning again i couldn't get the launch at all most arnd 14.2 over 100mph..i had one decent run it was a 13.7 at 103 mph w/ a .863 reaction time at a 2.0 60 foot....very disappointed in figureing this damn awd launch out.
