Unsung hero at the track--- A good clutch

Just wanted to share how important a good clutch is at the drag strip.

A $hitty clutch can wreak havoc on a pass... Last summer we took my buddy Jerry's car to the track with an act,,, This was a basic bolt-on car with a stock turbo. First pass was TERRIBLE and the car trapped real low..

That pass was right off the street from the drive from LI,NY.... We gave the car an hour to cool down the clutch,,,

And then another hour or so for the third run,,,

Man,, this car was lacking a clutch that could allow the car to perform.
4th pass of the day,,,

Moral to this story is, spending a few bucks on a decent clutch set-up may hurt the pocket, but it helps the ego big time to be able to get to the track and hit goals. This car was easily capable of 11.50's, but having to granny shift the car just makes it impossible. Getting locked out of gears is no fun at all-- Spend the bucks to get the results.

I have to say it comes down to a smooth shifting trans as well. That includes shifter cables, bushings, etc. Ive had the ACT HDSS with a street disk and it worked excellent for shifts up to 7700 rpm. I am currently on a QM twin disk...It allows you to shift more positively and at a higher RPM, but as soon as you get stuck in NY traffic for an hour you will want to shoot yourself in the face.

For cars under 550hp an exedy hd is a great daily driving clutch that holds power and allows quick shifts.

Anyhting over 550 should be on a tilton twin imo..
Ninja shifting-holds great power-hydro tob assembly

This is excellent advice. I could not agree more. I don't want to talk bad about a vendor or what not, but I had an ACT 6puck HD on my car and it did not perform. At least it didn't perform for my car. I cannot speak for others. I got locked out of 3rd a lot. And no amount of clutch pedal adjustment, bleeding the clutch, etc. worked. I switched to an Exedy Twin this past winter and could not be happier. Expensive, but it's good stuff.

I definitely agree here. Also clutch adjustment is very important to aide in you shifting the as fast and smooth as possible. An improperly adjusted clutch will also cause premature clutch wear.

My ACT left me high and dry for a race once, so I upgraded, Exedy twin disc HD is the bomb-diggity... I slam gears pretty violently and it works very nicely, shifts like butter, smooth engagement, and no crazy noise... Couldn't be happier
