First time at track times not where i expected

Hows everyone doing? Well i took my evo to the track for the first time (and first time for me) Went to Maple Grove Raceway in Pa. Current mods are full 3" turbo back, ETS fmic with short route piping, ets intake. Boost set at 23lbs and car is tuned. i made 8 passes in the night. my best time was a 13.292. My friend said my tires were spinning on every launch, i think that cause im running a 215/40/17 and its too small of a tire. So i think i need to go wider? Is the spin off the line perhaps why im trapping higher speeds for such low times? Any help would be nice. this week i'm putting on my fp green setup with a ported and polished head with cams, dnp 02 housing, buschur ported manifold, fic 1050 injectors, fuel pump and a new tune. (would love to hit low 12's with it if possible) (video posted at bottom)

Width of the tire doesn't do that much for traction. The height of the tire, air pressure, sidewall width and compound are MUCH more important than width. If you want to stick with the tires you have, try to drop the air pressure down to 18 psi or so, and spin them in the water box to get the rocks and dirt off first.

With better 60' times you should be able to get into the 12.8-12.9 range with your current mods. With that said, your 2nd half of the track looks good but the first half is somewhat slow for your mods - I'd expect 85 MPH in the 1/8. Maybe you're shifting slow or too high/low (should be around 7000 RPM in all gears).

I noticed on at least 2 launches the clutch was dumped, this will kill the 60ft time as stated by the times and takes a toll on the drivetrain. Practice is expensive but keep it up! The RPM you're shifting at is an important thought. If you're shifting too soon, you're not coming into the next gear at an ideal RPM. The tires are small and should be upgraded to OEM Specs when the tread is shot on current set for best performance. You're capable of low 12's with your current setup. Best of luck!

Clutch dumps hurt the drivetrain, but they don't' "kill" the 60' by any means!

Definitely looks like your losing the most in the first half of the track. Whats your 2-step set at? How are you releasing the clutch on the launch?

I'll give you 1 shot to explain your view. I'm sure you don't do this for a living.......I do.

You drag race for a living, or start arguments with people who have proven to go faster then most people down the 1/4 mile?

Honestly, I'm just curious as to how dropping the clutch kills your 60? I know it will kill clutches/transmissions/transfercases but I assumed the people who still did it, were doing it to go faster, not because they couldn't slow their left foot a little.

This advice is for this specific gentleman. The car is lightly modded............It will bog off the line if the clutch is quickly dumped and not lightly feathered out. This can be seen in the videos listed. Anyone who starts an argument over this is childish. This is simple advice.

Ok, thanks for the info. I guess that makes sense. I've never dumped my clutch so I wouldn't know.

you might want to try 18-22psi on the tires and bump up the two step to 6k

What i do is slip the clutch just a little bit till the car just starts to pull then drop it and hold on and shift. Tire pressure start high (30psi) and work your way down till it starts to hook. Just make sure you have a good feel with your clutch be fore you start dropping tire press. I am not a pro I just play, I was cutting 1.61s on a 245 40 18 with 32 psi. Hope this helps
