When I got my trans built by Shep before I asked him about using a short shifter. He didn't suggest using one. He said most of the time it causes grinding/shifting issues.
I'm thinking about getting one because I drove my friend's Evo 6 and he has a shirt shifter and feels/shifts better than mine which is oem.
Do you guys use one? What brand do you recommend?

i agree... and disagree... when i had my six i made a custom short throw, unlike most others i didn't simple shorten the shaft. i moved the pivot points and made it go from 4'' 2.5'' but settled back to 2.75'' so i could fit the console cover.
once i switched to the 5 the bug got me again and using the same idea i shortened the throw to 3 inches...
in neither case did it directly cause shift issues... once i installed shifter bushings the 6spd shifter became very ''gated'' and trying to make the 2/3 shift at speed was dicey... but once i adjusted it was good... on my 5spd shifter it feels natural. my trans is heavily preloaded so it is naturally hard to shift. but i tested on a stock trans and it felt great. didn't effect anything for the most part...
i agree with shep because most ''short throw'' mainly take away the height to reduce the throw and it takes more leverage to shift gears...
for what its worth though... check out a rally car shifter some time.. if its not paddle, the shifter is usually close to, it not a 12-18in tall...

No I don't use one in my car. In the past in my old EVO 8 it came with a short shifter and I absolutely hated it lol. Right after I bought the car, I put the stock shifter back in it. I don't recommend a short shifter.

I honestly wish I had seen this post before I decided to "upgrade" my shifter. I thought having the slightly shorter throw would be an advantage, but it seems it just does not shift as fast. Alot more effort is required. I'm pretty damn strong and I know I'm not shifting as fast as I was when the shifter was stock. I've come to the conclusion that Less Friction > Travel. This has me thinking of going back to a stock shifter...anyone have a stocker for sale, haha?
