Question Who is running 16's ??

I NEED to know this - i seen some guys that have OZ lancers are running mid to low 16's on the track. How the HELL are you doing it ??????? I ripped off a 16.90 my very first pass this past May but i have never been able to duplicate it. This past sunday i went to the track locked, cocked and ready to rock. Removed interior / fresh wash + 2 coats of wax / oil change with lucas pure syn oil added / lucas octane booster / cleaned and re gapped plugs / quarter tank of fuel - well the only run we got in was one round of qualifying when i ran a 17.09 at 81 mph. My 60 foot was 2.74 but my query is this..... how can i run almost 2 tenths slower versus the last time when i had everything in the car ???
i don't get it.

seriously...guys...think about what your gonna say before you actually say it....

whats an Si rated at?...~160/140?...its a DOHC vtec( which helps you out a lot in the high end)

then...

think about what a lancer is rated at?...120/120...SOHC...no variable valve timing!!!....

talk about a weaker motor...yes...the lancer(non evo) isnt built to be a drag car ...guess what niether was the evo.

now to answer the thread maker question...
how different were the driving conditions?...
tire wear?
mods?

what was your 60's time on ur 16 second run? i am not familiar with what are good 60's times for the oz but i think there is some room for improvement there. my last car was a NA eagle talon and the better 60's times would be around 2.3. this car only had 140 hp at the crank. practice your launch and you should be seeing your 16 second goal.

Using a G-tech, I ripped off a 16.46. While this isn't as exact as Thompson was, I'll take it. I have an SRI and the RRM axleback muffler.

A lot of it is the timing. What were your reaction times? What was your 60 ft? Did you spin the tires or get a solid takeoff? For that matter, how are your tires? Stock ones, or better grippy ones? How hot was it that day?

There's a lot of details that can hamper your speeds.

5speed or automatic?

my buddy and i went to the track a couple months ago. i have a 5speed, and he has automatic. well now would be a good time to list our mods (at the time).

5speed: short ram intake, kamikaze header. best run 16.4
automatic: short ram intake, best run 17.7

everyone has different mods, etc. it all depends on what you have/do to your car. i'm not sure if that helped or not, but you have to take EVERYTHING into consideration. on one of my runs i accidentally drove through a puddle before making the run. tires were wet, and i spun out at the line. i ran like 16.9

Okay guys - here goes. I realize that i prolly should have included my mods too.

AEM CAI / cat delete pipe / Greddy catback / Magnacor wires wit Denso plugs / 5 speed manual / stock tires but they are almost down to the wear bars - but this has been the same mods that i have had for a while

16.90 run - 2.40 60' / 10.74 - 64.1 mph half / 16.90 @ 78.9 mph

17.09 run - 2.74 60' / 11.11 - 65.3 mph half / 17.09 @ 81.8 mph

Both were day runs and the weather was pretty nice both days - sun with a few high clouds and temps about mid to hi 70's

Writing this, if i remember correctly i didn't spin the tires that much on that run and i did a bit on the 09 so i think i just need to figure out what rpm my car needs to launch at and i'll be okay but i really didn't think it would be woth a whole 2 tenths - would it

and, yes, JohnnyChimpo - i would LOVE to have an Evo, but like quite a few of us i can't afford one yet.

thanks L - that's a good answer. I hope to get a set of headers before the end of the year cause it looks like you picked up a lot from them.

You need to work on your 60ft time. See how your trap speed is higher on your second run, but you still managed a slower time? How are you launching? What RPM and are you dumping the clutch or slipping? My advice is that you practice launching many times before you hit the track. The perfect launch has a bit of wheelspin and then you're off.

Sorry, but my 1/8 time is faster than you entire 1/4.

Why are people taking mostly stock lancers to the dragstrip anyways? I think my mom's Camry would beat that, but I don't see dear old mom out there.

The base Lancer (in stock form) isn't made for 1/4 mile runs. I know of some people that have put like 10k and Nitrous in them and are running some wicked times. I don't see why they just didn't buy an EVO to begin with, but hey.
It's a good solid car, just not good for 1/4 miles. Be happy with what it does good!

Firstly, make sure the times you're comparing yourself to are measured in the same way. A lot of people run with one of those sensors on an open stretch of road, and are not timing themselves at a track like you. While those devices are certainly good to give you a ballpark figure, I think everyone agrees they're not as accurate.

Secondly, while a lot of people will hate to hear it, a small end nitrous kit is probably the cheap way to more power. Not that I know how well an Oz is going to hold the power. I've seen them do wonder for smaller engine Cavaliers, though.

Good for you but that just pisses me off..... you obviously can afford an Evo- I can't I am a divorced dad with two kids and less than stellar credit so i do what i can. I take my car to the track cause it's what i enjoy doing. I have loved cars ever since i was a kid and i haven't found any autocrossing events around my area so i drag race. My financial situation is starting to get better so i can soon afford to dump more money into my ride like i want to. Say i DO spend 10 K on my ride - RRM turbo & the works - i get about 240 / 245 hp to the wheels and if that serves me right that's about the same WHP as a stock evo. So i don't have AWD, big deal. For a purchase price of 17000 or so i still get about the same performance as an Evo for around 3000 - 5000 less. That is just fine by me.
Believe me, if i could afford one - i would buy one in a heartbeat. But i can't so i make do with what i have. In retrospect, i just think mitsu missed out on a golden opportunity to really make a serious dent in the sport compact market, and the lack of a wimpy 2.0 SOHC was a mistake. But this car is mine and i really enjoy it and i love making it go faster. But seriously - to make a comment like that........ i don't think that's necessary.

well.... in my opinion.... i prefer starting from scratch.... it's a better feeling... and base lancers dont need to be spending 10k, about half that and it'll be runnin 13's.... way cheaper then getting a evo right off the bat... but dont get me wrong... i love the evo.... its very........cute
