Quick Qs about shifting

What should you do if you're in the 1st gear you change it to 2nd you keep going slow down and now your speed is around 10mph, should you downshift to the 1st gear (I've heard it's not good) or keep going on the 2nd??? But then if you keep going on the 2nd gear drivetrain makes weird noises like it can't go?
It's a simple question I know :P (for some)

Right, the reason being that 1st gear doesn't have syncros, so you wouldn't want to downshift to 1st unless you were going 10 or under. Plus if you're slowing down from 10mph and stopping, it's time to use those brakes. Or if you're accelerating.. your call. It's my understanding that if you're <10mph, shifting to 1st won't hurt anything.
