Learning how to drive

Well, Ill be getting my new car this saturday. And have to drive home from kansas city to cincinati in a manual...the problem is this will be my first real time driving a stick. So I wanted to ask you guys some questions.

I know to push the clutch in to start the car And that to revearse the car should be at a complete stop. I know when shifting the clutch in gas off, shift, then clutch out gas in. But i have lots of questions for u guys, hopefully u can help me out.

#1.) Can you go from any gear to any gear safly? like say 2nd to 5th, or 1st to 3rd.

#2.) When I downshift. When do I do it? And do I have to go thru each gear? Like say if im comming off the highway and im in 5th. do I have to downshift thru every gear, or can i go from 5th to first?

#3.) What is the best way to shift?

#4.) About brakeing, Do I have to have the clutch in any time I break? Say im in 3rd and I have to stop at the light. can I use the brakes to slow down in 3rd?

#5.) Tell me anything else I need to know...please, I am going to have a long trip infront of me!

I know these sound like newb q's, but I was never tought how to drive stick. I learned how to park one in a garage by myself, but thats as far as my training goes...lol. So any help is appreciated!

Yes and no.. depending on Your RPM at a given time then yes you could go from a first to third gear(but prolonged subjection to this would throw syncros off and not be good in the long run)

#2.) When I downshift. When do I do it? And do I have to go thru each gear? Like say if im comming off the highway and im in 5th. do I have to downshift thru every gear, or can i go from 5th to first?

Down shifting again coorilates to engine RPM. if you slow from the highway in 5th gear all you have to do is brake and you are ok. unless you have to slow down to a stop, then you would need a lower gear. depeding on your speed and rpms. after you drive a manual for a while you will begin to feel when the engine has alot of "load" and when it does not . IE if you feel like the car just wont go ... you need a lower gear.. I could go very deep into this but its alot of IF and when kinda stuff

#3.) What is the best way to shift?
during casual driving. shifting at 3000-3500rpm is pretty acceptable and is the bes on gas for the most part

#4.) About brakeing, Do I have to have the clutch in any time I break? Say im in 3rd and I have to stop at the light. can I use the brakes to slow down in 3rd?

yes, but before your RPM drops to 0 you will need to depress the clutch
if you want more detail ask for further info on what i already provided

Yes, however if you shift from 1st to 5th going 5mph you are going to bog the engine and stall.

No, you can skip gears just fine, ie downshift 5th to 3rd fine. However, never downshift into first going over 5mph.

Depends on what you are doing.

You don't have to clutch-in when breaking. Just don't come to a complete stop because you will stall the car with the clutch engaged.

Don't panic when you stall. If you have to go up a steep hill, use the e-break from preventing you to roll backwards and once you feel the clutch start to pull you up the hill, release the ebreak. When starting from a stop, let the clutch out slowly until it starts to grip, then stop letting the clutch out and the car will continue to move forward, when the car stops accerating let the clutch out, this is called slipping the clutch. When down shifting you need to match the engine speed, ie if traveling in 5th at 3k rpm, 4th will be 4k rpm, so clutch-in, shift to 4th, rev engine to 4k, clutch out. Im sure people will cover whatever I missed, good luck.

once you're rolling, you'll get it.

Just practive doing the clutch in, accelerator in, clutch out while the car's turned off, so your body has a memorized reflex, so you could drive without thinking about paddles.

good luck on your trip.

If you have to stop real quick, push in clutch and brake the sametime hard and if you do get stuck on the hill, slip or handbrake and engage clutch. Just press the accelerator more than usual and slip the clutch a bit more.

Slipping the clutch isn't that good for your car.

ok so about the braking. I can brake with out the clutch in?

So if I come to a complete stop with the brake and clutch in I will stall?

Yes you can break without the clutch in.

No, if you come to a complete stop WITHOUT pushing the clutch in you will stall. More than likely the only time you'll have to worry about pushing the clutch in is if you're coming to a complete stop, downshifting, or upshifting.

Also just thought of something.

Every time I down shift, do I HAVE to rev match? or is it just a simple downshift? man sounds like some work for downshifting. what happens if u dont rev to the right rpm?

Ok, another Q'.

When I slow down to a light, what do I do? If I downshift into second. Can I just brake? or does the clutch have to be in?

Basically can I sit at the light without the clutch? can I be in gear and just have my foot on the brake?

ugh, I hate not knowing this! lol

don't bother downshifting, until you can shift up properly and go from a stop on a hill. You would downshift coming out of a turn, say, your in third going around a corner and your revs drop too low for third you'd shift into second so that you car wouldn't bog. But you could shift before you enter the corner by rev matching and downshifting. But I wouldn't worry about rev matching for now.

EDIT: If your sitting at a light shift into neutral and then you can just use the brakes. Otherwise you'll stall.

1. 2nd to 5th u can but theres no reason to upshift like that..
2. as people said dont downshift to 1st, anyone that tells you to do that obviously dont know evo gearing. learn the concept of rev matching and heelNtoe.
3. make sure to floor the clutch all the way...
4. clutch and brake is seperate issue... just clutch in and/or go to neutral if you brake to a stop or super low speed
5. just take it easy and you will learn as you go. and dont cry when you grind, as long as you dont force it when it grinds but let it go, you will do no damage. hope all this helps.
