Well I'm also new to the world of stick driving. trust me Just use your instinct. When I down shift I waited until I feel that the car needed more kick in the *** to go then I down shift to a lower gear if that still didn't do the trick I down shift to another lower gear, but never down shift to first. THat's just from what I've heard. But I always watch my RPM/speed limit so I know when it is a good time to do so. as for upshifting I tend to shift it at around 3000 to 3500 RMP just to save some juice. Good luck!!

Theres one more thing.. its kinda something you dont think about but theres alot? of people that dont really use the tac.. stay alert and drive with all your senses. As you feel the car bogging youll know you should down shift. Its the same way when you upshift. You will hear and feel the engine revving higher and that should clue you its about that time to shift. But the key like everyone says is getting her started... once you get 1st gear down its all cake from there on. Good Luck man..

Good luck!! My evo is the first manual car that i have driven and i learned on it. Some pointers even though iam just a bigginer. when coming to a stop what i do and many may disagree just because its like save your brakes or save your trans part. what i do is i let it slow down in gear and then clutch in neutral clutch out breaks. then i just wait with out the clutch in. then to start. clutch in , 1st and gas.

downshifting is kinda tricky.. i have been told never to downshift to first unless your at a complete stop. downshift and try to rev match. This is what i have been told. iam not an expert at all but some pointers are always good.

kool, thanks evolucion

So far Ive been doing it like this, Example:

5th gear, slowing down for a turn, entering the turn I clutch in, shift to 3rd, rev the engine a lil rev matching? then put it into 3rd gear. Is that the correct procedure? i hope so cause thats what ive been doing.... hehe.

Anyway, about droping it into 3rd from 5th on the highway, Not saying im doing this cause im not, but how do u downshift to 3rd correctly going 60? like what rpm do i rev to till I let out the clutch?

thank ya much

You know what I'm also new to stick driving so I just followed the above manual and it seems to work. But the first week I got the car man it was scary, I was in 5th then I approach a tight turn so I slow down to about 40+ mph then I down shift to 3rd and I can feel my car juked forward really really bad. Eversince then I never downshift from 5th to 3rd gear at higher speed than 30+. So say if I'm on 5th then I approach a turn, I usually slow down to somewhere near 30 mph. If I didn't brake hard enought to get to anywhere near 30 mph, then I would down shift to 4th. As I exit the corner If I feel that the car needed a kick in the *** to go then I would down shift to 3rd without looking at my rpm or my speedometer. Cuz I know that I needed to go to a lower gear in order to push the car faster. But here's what I've figure out. By looking at the chart above it said that the possible driving speed for 2nd gear is 56 mph so I'm guessing that it's ok to downshift to 3rd with the speed around 60mph. So in order to down shift to 3rd with the speed around 60mph I would first step and hold on the brake then clutch in and shift down to 3rd then move my right foot to the gas pedal. Now as I step down on the gas I would also release the clutch out. I don't know if this is the right way to do it, but it's just a thought. I'm using the same technique like anytime I'm downshifting to a lower gear, but with a slower speed. I wouldn't reccomend you to do that. Just Like you I still have a lot more practice to go. I'm totally new to car and slowly learning it. Good Luck!!

When I got to drive an Evo the other day, I found it was more difficult to drive than the only other manual cars I have driven: a Del Sol and a Taurus SHO. I guess since it was the first car I've driven that was fast, I wasn't used to it.

Most cars a now a days won't let you shift into first from a roll, but they can be forced.
And if you're going up a hill and get stuck at a stop light, keep it in first, but let the clutch out ever so slightly, you won't roll backwards and you won't creep forward if you do it right. Usually this won't matter, but the first time someone stops 3 inches off your back bumper you'll wanna know this.
