what exactically is drifting

my friend and i went into a debate about drifting, he say the only way to drift is performing a wheel-lock for like a short period and than stepping on the gas to lose traction to achieve the drifting, but than, i check the videos but i didn't see that there are wheels-locking and making a drift around a sharp turn... so im very about all this drifting stuff please help me out

ooook. drifting. let's see. drifter usually use the e-brake(wheel lock) for very sharp turns. other wise, its just a downshift and gas. its a strategic use of g-force and angle of the car with using the 2 from wheel for guidance while the rear tired throw the car lateral. it's quite an amazing sports. anymore question aim me at "poop shove it"

using e- break is cheating for drifting...the only car that can called "Drift" must be a FR

corection FR cars dont drift they power slide

drifting is dumb it just slows you down you can save presios time and quality rubbers buy making your corners ina strategic manner buy cutting the fastest and shortest possible lane through a turn

why doesent someone talk to Rob "rock" after all he is a race car driver?

hmm all the japanese video clip i see they say only FR can drift..cars like silvia, S13, S14, 180sx, FC, FD, 86(trueno), skyline(FR)...
and yea drifing is kinda like powerslide but its not quite..drifting is something thas in control! u gotta be really good at your clutchin technique.. and gotta counter steer once ur car changed the directions.. gotta keep ur throttle open so it holds the drift(slide)...its something like that as i remembered....but i am pretty sure only FR can drift tho...

oh and yea..drifting doesnt really make ur car go faster on the track..but it helps if you are racing thru the canyons... cuz it basicly set u ready for the next turn! so if ur really good...and u can drift all they way thru the canyon...haha...dunno if anyone can do that...that must be razy!! its all about heaving really good suspenions setups/ tires, the weight transfers, clutching heel/toe.. and being a good driver
hmm... seen "initial D"?...its all about Drifting!!

Liquidlancer, I have to disagree. Rally racers use drifting quite often, so you would think that they would use which ever method is the fastest for each corner (although they don't do much drifting on the tarmac sections, they still do a little), and according to some reading my father found, slight drifting has been an important technique in SCCA road racing (and I mean Mustangs and Camaros and stuff too) since the 1960's. Just my .02

u can drift in any car...just different styles of drifting depending on if it FR,FF,MR,AWD

but for the fastest time on a dry paved roadcourse u don't want to drift. drifting is more for show that fast lap time...but on ice, snow, gravel and dirt a drift is much faster than gripping
