From what i understand, there's only one situiation that drift drive is faster then grip drive.

with narrow road + sharp turns, drift can make the car facing the exit of turn quicker then grip.

idk if this is off topic...but when i go autocrossing with my friend who has an m3 he consistently (on tight turn courses) runs better drifting than he ever could in a straight line and not hanging the rear end out there. He was told not to drift because they dont want the events to be about drifting so he is only allowed to drift on "fun runs" but every time he does best on those. Just my .02

If you want to keep the turbo up as you corner your should left foot brake it a bit.

i thought drifting was illegal in scca. at most you can only have tire slip.

unless im at scca, i only drift to rotate the car and only on small tight corners. techniques i use are mostly feint and braking drifts with this car though. i hate reaching for the e-brake (even though from experience its the least scary and easiest way to start a drift). if you do drift though, just dont countersteer to much. in an awd car you dont just spin out if you try to power out of the turn with your wheels countersteering, you fishtail hard.

the only time sliding the car would be faster than gripping would be if there was a really tight hairpin that the car just couldn't make fast normally. the EVO's turning radius is garbage, so in those cases, it may be faster to slide the rear end around

I like how EvoM comes up as the 5th search result for "drifting vs the line"

EvoM either has really good seo or it's one of the first places you should go on the internet to learn how to drive. I guess it's both. Nice job.

Think of it like this: If you take the grip racing line and get 1/2 way thru the corner and there's something in your way (rock, crashed car, goat, etc.), you're not left with many options, either hit the obstacle or run wide off the road. In stage rally, running wide off the road often means you hit a tree or fence or go over a cliff.

Dave

plus we do not have to worry about turbo lag i am with a mild ALS set up making around 14 psi at idle

in autoX or circuit track racing where you have a same corners and same environment and surface over and over again, the best bet is a good race line without slipping any wheel.

A drift can help set you up for a corner exit better, but it won't be faster through the turn. It's all show boating really.
