heel toe shifting
heel toe shifting
could someone give me a few pointers on this? i've been practicing and whenever i "blip" the throttle to downshift i have problems keeping the braking steady and not following the throttle
thanks
thanks
Follow it through with a more relaxed technique, all you're doing is bouncing the throttle while foot is still on the brake following by releasing the clutch as you pop the throttle. Its not really an easy way to explain its more of practice that you'll realize your errors. You don't need complete heel on throttle, just enough foot to give it a good pop, but keep your toe on the brake as needed don't release at the same time as heeling.
im such a noob. ive been blipping throttle with the edge of my right foot, (as the left is pressing the brake)---- dangerous and crappy, i know, but i read it in some racing article and thought thats how its done...
now im gonna practice doing it correctly
While 'heel-toe' is the established name for this technique it is really a misnomer, as generally you use the ball of your foot on the brake, and the right side of your foot to blip the throttle. Blipping the throttle is accomplished by rolling the right side of your foot towards the throttle, while attempting to keep consistent pressure on the ball of your foot for the braking component. It takes practice to be able to keep constant pressure or modulate the braking pressure, while simultaneously bilpping the throttle. Keep practicing, preferably in safe traffic conditions, and you'll get it down eventually.
Note: since the throttle pedal is some distance away from the brake pedal, you will need to have the bottom of your right foot twisted towards the throttle before you try and blip it with the side of your foot, so the angle of your right foot will look a bit like this:

It took me a while to get good at it. I learned it driving a Miata.
The best advice I can give you is to practice heel-toe downshifting during normal street driving. Practice, practice, practice ....
Also, once you blip the throttle, be sure to execute the downshift quickly. Be smooth and quick about it.
