Hill Techniques ad nauseum (MERGE)
complete stop:
1)pull ur ebrake up until the car wont slide downwards when u let go the brake.
2) Shift into 1st gear
for extreme Amatuers:
3) step on the gas and rev up abt 3k, let go the clutch a bit til you'll notice the front of the car lifted a bit, or the rev drops down to 2k, or it becomes more quiet.
4) step on the gas again, just a little bit this time and u'll notice the car is being pushed forward a little bit.
5) now release the ebrake and let go the clutch slowly and push the gas a little more and there u go.
**that's for EXTREME noobs.
of coz u dun have to do all that if u can handle a stick well..
while moving, simply downshift when u dun feel the car is having enough power...
but don't shift into the 1st gear while the car is in motion...

Careful though- some of the hills here in seattle are really steep and the e-brake trick won't work. In fact the guy at my Mitsu dealer told me that the ebrake wasn't designed to be a "hill holder". I hope your hills aren't as steep.
Start out on small hills when there's no traffic. In fact you can do it on a level street just to feel how the car reacts and then practice on hills.
Now get off the computer and drive!!!

Am I the only one who can go up a hill from a dead stop without using the e-brake and rolling backwards? I figure if I've done it in San Francisco more than once, I could do it anywhere...?
just get it to the friction point (where the car shakes when u release the clutch) and ease out the clutch and at the same time step on the gas and u wont roll back nor stall. Not hard. Dont use ur ebrake.
I can start uphill without rolling back, too. It's just a matter of being quick on the clutch and gas right after releasing the brake, and knowing the feel of your clutch and gas enough to do it quickly without stalling or peeling out.
And yeah, Joe's method above is a cheater method and a good way to burn out a clutch, but in desperate measures I suppose that's all you got.
Billy is pretty good at the clutch too. IN an ITN road rally, we came around a blind curve to find the checkpoint 20 feet up a short hill from us and we had 2.75 minutes to go. He rocked the car back and fourth and got us across at the right time. So much for the clutch, and I suppose the rally official could have pemalized us because I am sure the car did not always move in a forward motion, but what a trip!

if you're driving a manual leave on 3rd gear
