The Epic of Crappy Gas... And Dynoflash
The Epic of Crappy Gas... And Dynoflash
Ok first off... When Al stresses to get GOOD gas, and make sure it's a kind you can have access to all the time, he's not kidding:
So, Al came to Utah to tune for us all, my car had boost issues to start out with, a Hallman fixed that... Then I got tuned, Al checked the timing and it was pulling like a *****. Needless to say, we were both pretty pissed, me especially. He gave me a fairly conservative tune and said "get rid of this ****ty gas and put some good gas in" So I drove around, for most of a Sunday morning getting rid of some really bad gas, filled up half a tank with COSTCO gas, which ended up even worse than the gas before even with an Octane Booster... Then Al and I took the car to Chevron and filled up the other half of the tank and put a few more Octane Boosters in, the timing fixed itself right up and was going just fine... THEN my quest for him to be able to safely tune it a bit more and pull a bit of power out was to drain the tank, AGAIN... Draining a tank after a flash that yields more gas mileage (as well as a crap load of power) is not an easy or short task. Running the car in as low of gear as possible with out being crazy loud and revving it up to ~3k at lights and holding it there, it took 220 miles to drain the tank. Took it back after filling up with some 91 Chevron with no Octane Booster, Al made some adjustments and bam ~10 more hp. Switching from the crappy gas to the costco/chevron blend fixed the timing enough that Al said I probably gained ~30 hp and it sure felt like it, especially further up top.
The moral of this story: Don't be a dumbass like I was, when Al says to get good gas, get good gas, or you'll be losing out on a lot of power you could be gaining. Oh yeah, that, and Al is the greatest, he took time out of his own free time to help me figure out the issue and work it out, I pretty much had 3 short tuning sessions over the weekend, it was a PITA though, 1 tuning session, 1 tank of GOOD gas, that's how it should be done... Do it right, don't pay the price of a weekend like I did.
P.S. My car pulls like crazy now!!! especially 4-6k compared to before switching to ALL Chevron, Thanks again and again Al, and have a safe flight home!

In this Salt Lake town - the Chevron is the best - its very good 91.
SOme other brands I saw were very very bad and the costco was a complete disaster - prob about 87 octane - stay away.
