Tucson Dynoflash story.....case study #74:

Picked Al up at the airport and took to hotel. Then i was first up. I wanted the UTEC tuned. When he took my deposite he verified that he tuned UTEC'c. Well that nite he said "i dont do UTEC's, their a piece of $hit, i do flashes". Ime like o.k. here we go. (frankly, i thought people only acted like that in the movies). So, i let myself be talked into a flash. Al asked me several times if the UTEC was in map-0. After an hour of having dificulties, we found it to be in map-1. No idea how. "your an idiot" he tells me. Ime still thinking how the hell did it happen cause i only use the remote switch. So we head back out and he nails the AFR's. I only run 100 octane, so we set it at 11.4. Timing was what ever map he uploaded. We spent no time playing with timing. He then made a 5 minute 91 octane map on the utec. (i thought he didnt tune UTEC's). Anyways, ime flashed for 100 and use the utec for 91. Ime not sure this is where i wanted to be, but WTF. We were tuning for almost 3 hours. Yes, the extra time was free. You just had to endure being called an IDIOT 17 times. And all your electronics being called junk and jap crap.....anyways, so i head home. Mentally exhausted. Car ran fine. But it ran fine before his tune. So wondering whats up, i did a data log. AFR's are flawless, but the timing was 3 degrees less than the stock ECU ran. I compared it to a previous log. And my UTEC runs ECU in the timing map which means it uses the factory timing. So i go back to the hotel in the morning and very politely ask why i have less timing?? "you dont like my tune or what??" i reply, "i cant tell any difference, flash me back" he says o.k. and then tells me that my boost controller is crap. He then says to put in this Halman controller and try it again. Thinking he just wants to sell parts, i say no. He, of course is persistant, and i agree. OOOMMMFFFGGG!!!! BLAST TTTFFF OFF....Holy crap, my car hauled A$$. Boost hit like a freight train. O.K. now ime happy.....Still the timing issue haunts me but......So now i wonder if i had figured out the controller problem befor the tune, how it would have ran. So did i get what i paid for??? Yes, but not in the tune i suspect, but in the discovery of mechanical issues. And thats worth it to me. Some of the other guys were very happy too, Some were not. The worst thing you can do at a tuneing session with him is go for a ride in other peeps cars. All cars are different and if you ride in a fast one like mine was, everyone you give a ride to will be upset their car isnt as fast. We learned this to late. Drive your car only, and make a before and after comparison then ride with others. Also, dont get upset if you spend $400 for a custome tune and it feels the same. 91 octane here in AZ is the worst in the country. On some cars, there isnt anything that can be done without getting into the danger zone, but you will never know unless you give it a try. Man, one Stock evo he tuned almost felt as good as mine and i have tons of stuff done......This is a true story, not a flame. You now have an idea as to what to expect. Make DAM sure your car is mechanically sound. I actually liked the guy. Younger people will find him intimidating. Speak your mind and ask questions. These are the events as they actually happend. Names were withheld to protect the innocent. This case is closed.

I disagree with most of what you have asserted here.

I think in your case , you are just a guy who is hard to please.

Its nice to see that you are posting stuff like this after I had to stay up till about 5:00 a.m. my time after flying across the country on two connecting flights to get there and get directly off a plane and into your car to deal with YOUR modifications which I did not sell you or install.

Is it frustarting to have to tune a car TWO times becuase YOU fail to put your Utec map on Map zero ? Hell yeah. Next time instead of asking you 3 times - ARE YOU SURE its in map 0 ? I will just switch it to map zero myself.

Do I like missing sleep to work with inferior products - NO. Did I do it - yes. Was I happy no.

I tune Utecs but they suck b/c the knock control is end user defined and people blow up their engines with it. The flash is much safer that is why I strongly suggested that you use the reflash - switch your utec to map zero and then I would make you a free map 1 for 91 octane pump gas. Again - more work - more complexity - all prodived at NO extra charge.

It was your call to accpet a tune that I was offering or simply decline my services. I am not going to go along with customer suggestions which make no sense. My simple stance is this is what I can offer you - take it or leave it. If you agree to what I offer then its rather sad to be complaining about it weeks later ?

If you did not like my suggestion - then you should have declined the offer not whine about it weeks later on the internet.

As for your "E-01" boost controller - they suck plain and simple and that is why your spool up sucked and the car was feeling weak. As I further suggested - the simple $80 Hallman MBC is vastly superior and less costly. If my advice and suggestions were not accurate then your car would not be working so well now. I gave you the hallman to test on a trial basis and you had no need to buy it if it did not make the improvement which I suggsted.

I did my best to help you to get your car running well in a short period of time which I had available. The fact that some of the gear you had selected was not functional just further complicated things.

Its sad when I put in extra time on some one's car and no extra charge and then later have to read a post like this one.

Did you just want me to buy it before hand, or did you just want to bring it with you? I will be sending two more deposits for two of of my friends that do not have paypal... I think that would give us at least five.... Let me know asap so i can start planning and take off work depending on what days that you come

Hard to please??? Yes. No you did not sell or install my mods. As i stated, it WAS NOT in mao-0. Correct, no extra charge. Ime complaining??? Uh, not even. I dont know why you think that. You did do your best...(WTF is that about??) Helping your customers is never sad, its good business. Read a negative post like this??? WTF???? This post was totally in your favor. It wasnt in mine. Ime the one who paid $400 to be called an idiot and to learn my E-01 was slow, not you. Maybe you need to get some sleep and re-read the post.......

My tunning with Al was great. Al was able to significantly increase boost without getting into safety issues. My car was running really good and Al told me that the car was tuned to a reliable and conservative point. I asked him to squeeze the most out of the car then he retuned for a higher REV limiter, and more aggresive fuel mapping etc.

I was very happy, there was no more initial overboost spiking , the boost was very consistent and you can feel the powercurve all the way to the red line. I think that the simplicity of my car made it even easier for the tunnig.

Having the 264/264 HKS cams, stock fuel pump, stock fuel rails, stock injectors,3" Works Downpipe,3" Greddy cat back and air filter worked very well.

I had experience with the UTEC, I had a WRX putting 280.3whp on a Dyno Dynamic Dyno at Dyno-comp,Phoenix AZ. I thought that the UTEC was the bomb but after all I regret of my tunning and I regret of my UTEC. The UTEC advertizes a lot of good feautures, it is listed as stage 1 on the WRX and they say that you can get 35whp on the WRX.

My WRX was horrible spooling up with its FP18g turbo, the car would stall often and if you had the A/C on forget about spooling bellow 5000rpm.
This custom tune with AL reflashing my ECU on my 05 EVO MR was fantastic, the car is faster at the track, better spool up,no more boost spiking, much smother power band, no more black clouds of smoke when reving the engine..

By the way, I was also called stupid, but that is just the way that Al's talk, he is very funny, I don't think that he means to offend no one at all. He would tell you stupid in a sentence, something like this:

Cmon Bro, Don't be stupid , you don't want to run your engine with pis gas Bro'..

I think that he called me Pu$$y once because I was concern about the speed and the freakin Cops flying above us with the Helicopter, Remember Al?

Al Thanks.

As i stated, some were happy, some were dissapointed. Not with the tune, but with the performance of their cars.
