Illinois visit?
I have been monitoring this thread and am very interested. I just need to know the date before I deposit the money. COUNT ME IN POSSIBLY!
Two more quick questions Al: If I cannot make the date and I opt for the mail-in tune, how much does it cost to get upgraded to a custom tune once you come back to Chicago again. Also, what is the difference in hp between a custom tune and mail-in flash with minimal mods (exhaust, MBC, etc.)?
Thanks!

For a repeat customer, it's $300 for a custom road tune at a later date. However, you should really get road tuned on this trip, because his prices are going to be rock-bottom.
There is no exact difference in HP between the two tunes. It's always relative and dependent on the car. The main difference is that the entire tune gets optimized 100% for your car and how it rolls on the road. A mail-in is more conservative, because it is a "best-guess" on what is good for your car and your mods. A road tune is far superior for safety, reliability, smooth power delivery, and max power reasons.
Ahh very good I see.
So Warr...
Does it make sense that a mail in tune is $300, and to get an upgrade, you have to pay an addition $300 ($600)? A custom tune by itself is around $350 isnt it? It wouldnt even really be worth it financially to purchase a mail in tune if you plan on getting custom tuned later...
Im not trying to start an arguement. Im just trying to learn.
Also, in speculation, would you say there is a 5whp difference in a totally stock IX mail-in flash compared to a custom flash, or more or less than 5 whp?

So, a regular IX mail-in flash is $300 remotely, but is only $250 in person. A custom IX flash is $450 on a trip. So, if you pay $250 in person for a base flash, then $300 later for a road tune, you've paid $550 total instead of $450 total, but with your car tuned during that whole time you waited for the custom flash. Is $100 worth having your car tuned and rocking during the wait time? That's up to you. If you plan to get custom tuned in the near future, then getting a base flash is probably not worth it. If there will be a long time between the base flash and custom tune, then I think the $100 differential is definitely worth it. Better to drive around with a well-tuned, fast car than to just save $100. Again, that's all up to you.
No custom tune is $350, not even for VIIIs - those are $375 on a trip and normally $400 at Dynoflash. You guys are going to get special pricing on this trip, so I highly recommend taking advantage of a custom tune. Otherwise, you'll end up spending more than you need to spend.
Yeah, it's usually no less than a 5whp peak difference, but you need to transcend that whole peak HP mentality. It's not about the peak numbers - it's about the area under the curve. You could very well gain 5whp peak, but gain 10-15 through the mid-range. The base flash tune will have a smoother power curve than stock, but not as smooth as a custom tune. So, the benefit of the custom tune is that it is 100% specified to your car, your mods, your altitude, your climate, your roads, and your personality. A base flash can only guess at these things while leaving extra room for error in case of poor conditions. To reiterate, I ran a 12.26 on my base flash on my VIII with basic mods, so it is still a great tune - it's just not optimal.

Thanks for clearing that up for me Warr. I appreciate it

For those of you who want to get tuned on a dyno you should contact P&L motorsports in Franklin Park to discuss dyno time for the tune. If enough people are interested in renting out dyno time you may be able to get a reduced rate.
