Cam install gone bad

Poor customer today went to some idiot to have his cams installed - he was throwing cam position sensors and crank position sensors CEL's

I pulled the cam gear cover to check the cam timing and discovered the cam timing belt was loose enough that it has skipped a few teeth on the way over for the tune

The cam gears lined up but the main pulley was off two teeth

Don't know what the moral of the story is . . . it was just sad

Could not tune the guy

men that sucks. thats why i went to a shop here in san diego that knows everything about the evo and got my cams installed, i will not take the risk if the install was cheaper. I rather go to someone that knows what there doing and a little bit more money than having these problem.. Hope the guy got it fixed though.. feel sorry for him

Talk to WOT... that's the moral of the story! He will get it done right. BTW Al thanks for the Flash today. I'm enjoying it and will enjoy it much more when the exhaust gets installed.

Now that just looks retarded. Why are the stock camgears marked intake and exhaust. Like it makes a damn difference? The gears should not ever come off the belt if they were not being switched to aftermarket ones. It appears they did not have the tensioner tool and maybe took off the front covers to manually adjust the tensioner (not the autotensioner). Then did not tighten it back to spec again.

I think that as this car had 60 plus K miles they were trying to change the belt and tensioner

I think that they prob did not have the proper tool to set the tension adjustment and that is why the belt was so loose - or they did not know you are suppossed to turn the engine over 6 times - wait a few mins and then recheck the tension

In any event I feel bad for the customer and it seems he is prob going to have a few bent valves

Keeping my fingers crossed

I am the unlucky (poor installer choice really) SOB that this happened to. I had them replace all the belts timing, balance shaft and serpentine at the same time, car has 65,000 miles on it. the moral is I'm tyring to get in contact with TT or RRE to see if they can save it. Should have done that first off. night"o" mare.

One is on the west coast, the other on the east. Any competent Mitsu mechanic should be able to handle this though. Mitsu gave us a gift of a serpentine belt in 2003 which cuts down on the work of tensioning many individual belts.

Outside of that, its essentially identical to the last 16 years of 4g63.

By TT I meant Tuning Technologies in Colton CA. The same guy did all the work on my Audi A4 which was a pretty complicated engine. Anyway RRE is booked for almost two weeks and I haven't been able to reach Tuning Technologies.
