2 things I will share with my "lifes expierence" with running rich and the Evo. Oil on the Tungsten wire in MAF sensor (Spray MAF cleaner on wire, re-check), or Front O2 went bad. Plug in Autozone code checker, or at dealership. If these are OK, tune it.

That's interesting. My only question is how do you get that oil residue on the MAF??? The MAF is before the recirculated valve cover vent tube. I have also been running rich. Even with a catch can, I get that oily residue on my turbo, lower intake, etc. I never really thought that the MAF was in danger because it's before the recirc tube.

The prior "Cone intake" I bought new, had oil in/on it. If you use a drop in, or cone, which you "oil", that is how it gets on the wire. If you use the MAF cleaner, it might solve the problem.

that black smoke you see is expected without a catalytic converter. I mean if it looks like a smoke screen, something is wrong, but if it looks like a faint haze, its expected.

put a cat on and see if you are still having problems.

FYI - we / I do not diagnose a rich condition by black smoke or exhuast color

The only way to check the a/f is with a wideband 02 sensor
