MBC vs. non-MBC
MBC vs. non-MBC
Hello Al,
I will be contacting you shortly about a mail-in reflash. I was hoping enough people in my part of the country would show interest in a full tune but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I am planning on the following mods: K&N replacement filter, Buschur 2.5" DP, and Buschur 3" catback with Magnaflow muffler option.
Fuel mileage and warranty are primary concerns of mine. I'm actually looking to improve my MPG for the longer trips so I wanted to avoid a manual boost controller. Can you tell me what kind of a difference HP wise I could expect between a setup with an MBC vs. one without?
Also, if you have recommendations for a compromise between producing the power and increasing MPG it would be greatly appreciated. I was really hoping to produce around 300WHP but I don't think I will get there without an MBC. Also, I always use BP 92 Octane (best available in our area). Your expertise and thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hm, if you are wanting to increase gas mileage than an MBC isnt going to really take anything away, unless you have it to the floor. Perhaps you meant warranty?
I recently installed an mbc, and I think it is safe to say you cannot achieve 300whp with just the mail in option.
Just drive on down to Dallas during the 22 for your custom tune, then you could maybe hit 300.

itll be hard to get 300whp without getting other mods if you dont get the boost controller. I have HKS RS intake, 3inch dp and 3inch cat back, a mbc at 20psi peak, and dynoflash. I made 293whp on a dynapack...and that was on 94 oct sunco. Just go with a stealthy mbc. Mine is under the hood and it blends in as if it were stock.
Prowler, I wish I could make Dallas but I don't have the time. KC would have been great but I guess all the EVO owners in the area went to the St. Louis tune. Hmmm... what to do?
Yes, the MBC issue was more for the warranty. Does anyone know what the difference would be between MBC vs. non-MBC?

Another thing to remember is once you open up the intake and exhaust, your boost will drop 1 or 2 PSI and to compensate for the loss, you need a boost controller to bring it back up. It's a vital part to tie in all the other mods.
The boost controller will not affect the MPG, unless you keep it in boost all the time. When cruising on the freeway, you will really not be in boost in 5th gear and your MPG will be just as good as stock, if not better with the flash.

I'm kind of waiting for Al to respond to this one as well. The main concern I have with the MBC is the loss of ability for the ECU to be able to lessen or cut the boost if it deems necessary.
AL, have you seen any problems where the ECU was not able to cut the boost to a safe level, because of the MBC, and then caused some damage to the engine or other problems???

So MBC or EBC?
So, which is better a MBC or an EBC and why? The only reason I could see to getting a MBC over an EBC is for cost and simplicity, but you can't get much simpler than the old skool Greddy Profec B Spec I. Hi and low and balance. How much simpler and convenient can you get?
BTW who makes the best, most reliable MBC?

Al,as well as myself highly recommend the HKS evc 5 as it seems to be the best and easiest ebc to use,but a bit costly(515.00 shipped from one of vendors, edo preformance)
but if cost is an issue, which it always is,then a simple mbc will do the trick
.You need the
extra boost to maximise the preformance that a Dynoflash will give you.Get some sort of
boost controll and you will not regret it.

There was some report comparing EBC's and the Hallman MBC supposedly held boost better than some of the EBC's. This influenced me to buy the Hallman Pro Rx (whatever the top of line is?.) I'm still waiting on get the in cockpit changer for it tho. It has definitely been awesome, except it gets hotter than a SOB when the engine is on.
