Technical advisory RE: Exedy Clutch installation methods - crticial info

We have some reports of the release bearing popping out on Exedy twin disk clutch units

I have spoken at length with Exedy technical department on this and I have some answers about why this has occured and how to prevent it

It is important to note that these examples have been very rare and that teh vast majority of these Exedy units have performed perfectly without incident. However - I sought to discover the cause of these few incidents and I think i have some answers

Installation is the KEY and sevreal points muct be clearly addressed to avoid any problems

1 - Its important that the mechanic NOT distort the metal plate that goes between the engine block and tranny - Mitsubishi part number MD 321827 - and if that plate is bent at all it must be replaced - its cheap about $8.00. Many mecahnics seem to use a pry bar on this plate to get the tranny to seperate from the engine.

2 - Always use a new release bearing.

3 - When intsalling the transmission - make SURE that the tranny imput shaft does not strike the metal clip on the presure plate which secures the release bearing. Any damage will cause the release baring to break in time.

4 - MAKE SURE the nmating surface between engine and tranmsission is FREE from any grease or dirt what so ever - even a small amount can distort the trans mounting angle.

5 - MAKE SURE you have the tranmission tightened down evenly and square to the engine.

If the follow the above procedures you will not have any incidence of failure of the release beraing clip as it is designed to sustain many times the force required to disengage the clutch.

I have the hyper carbon - which is really just the most amazing clutch you can imagine and it uses the same stock style clip as the other exedy clutches - I have not had any problems since I learned the above data.

Did you know that Exedy is the OEM manufacturer of all EVO and WRX clutches from the factory?

They have invested huge amounts in R & D on these new aftermarket cluches and they really work very well.

You can check out some of the data on the clutch I run in my car here

Its like Ferrari F1 technology on the street

baby soft engagement and ultra high heat capacity

Thanks for the great info AL.

Also, I was going to have PRUVEN install my clutch, are they aware of this information. I am sure that they are.

Also, I was wondering about getting another custom dynoflash done. I just recently installed the Walbro per your advisory and I can def. tell the car has lost some power, but does run pretty smooth. Also, I just ordered the buschur FMIC with upper intercooler piping, mini battery kit, and I was going to order HKS cams today 264int/272 exhaust. Do you suggest ordering injectors too even though I am running the stock turbo.

Thanks for the help Al

JUST FYI...i am the guy where you beat the crap out of my WORKS P2 reflash on the dyno.
