Advice on my upgrade path.
Hello AL,
I have ordered the BR manual boost controller, a defi machanical gauge, and K&N panel filter. I am in southern California and would like to know what you would recomend I do as far as safe boost settings for this summer since I will not have an exhaust or fuel pump for a while. I was really looking foward to meeting you and having you reflash my ECU while in LA but I believe you canceled the whole thing. Are you going to be in LA or preferably OC anytime soon? The convienience of not being without a car for 2 days is critical for me since this is my only car.
Thank you for your Time,
Guack

I tried Pming Al and he said just post it on his forum and he doesn't seem to wanna answer here either. I was really excited about doing the tuning through dynoflash but if he doesn't have time to answer a basic question then maybe I should look to the local tuners.
I believe Al is doing a big tuning event in DC this weekend, so he may be a little slow answering the next few days, but he always gets back to you for technical help. With the mods you are talking about, on California gas, I would be leary to go above 19-20 psi. It seems with MBC, you spike up, and then drop 2psi over the rpm range from 3000-7000rpms. You don't want to go too high as you have lower octane gas to begin with. Most of the time you use a MBC to make up for boost that you lost when putting an aftermarket exhaust on the car. I watched an EVO with an axleback, downpipe, Buschur MBC, K&N drop in, Walbro fuel pump and a DYnoflash put down a repeated 295 whp. This is with less a $1000 invested. This was with stock cat. Give Al a chance, you wont be disappointed
I know he does great work and he is the master, thats why Im here.
I talked to Rob (socalevo.net) and he advised me to at least get a downpipe and fuelpump (which Al also highly recomends). I guess that there is no way to make some decent power without at least these two so I wont get flashed or install the MBC untill I get these. I would really just like to know his advise on maximum safe boost on 91 CA gas with a KN panel,2.75in tanabe downpipe, and walbro fuelpump.

You can actually make very good power with just a few more mods. I have seen used axlebacks here go for $100. An axleback is worth about 10 whp, but that is considering that you use the MBC to get boost back to stock, as you lose about 1-2 psi with the axleback due to loss in backpressure. So with a used axleback for $100, a Walbro FP for $100, your MBC and K&N, get a mail in flash for $200. Spend some money and get a good boost gauge as well. So, for about $500 more than you have spent, you will be up probably 35-40whp. I would do an axleback over a downpipe if given the choice. Both would be preferable. There is some debate over what a downpipe adds, but with stock cat, I would bet not much more than 5-10whp if your lucky from a downpipe. Buschur 2.5 downpipe is $225 and works fine. I would not go from a 2.75 inch downpipe to a 2.5 inch cat

I was on the road all last night and tuning today so this is the first chance I have had to reply
I recomend a max boost of 20 psi tapering down slightly on 91 octane

Thnx guys. Due to lack of funds and desire to keep the exhuast mostly stock I will end up running a 2.75in tanabe downpipe, BR MBC@19PSI, KN panel, Defi D-Gauge boost, walbro fuelpump, and dynoflash tuning.
Hey Al, you never answered my 3 biggest questions;
Based on the mods I listed above and 91octane, Do you have a flash for me, will you be in LA anytime soon, and what kind of gains can I expect.
Thnx guys for the help,
Guack

Hey Guack007! I hate to see someone give up... If you browse and search through the BILlION posts you'll find good approximations of what your car should make with those mods and the DynoFlash. All of it is of course subjective to the dyno on which you are tested. A good guess would be somewhere around 250 - 270 whp.
From you list of mods, I would say your biggest restriction would be the stock "catback" exhaust. A bigger DP won't help much if your are running the stock 2.5" cat and very restrictive muffler. At the very least you should try the Buschur muffler delete. There are some people on these boards running similar mods with a Buschur muffler delete and are around or at 300 whp.

I spend around 20 hours a week on these forums and search more then most. I am simply looking for a few questions to be answered and have tried PMing Al and posting it here and he just beats around the bush and gives very general , non-technical answers. I know that opening up the rest of the exhuast is ideal but I though that he had so many maps that he could tailor his tune for your mods. Isnt that the whole point?
