EVO gets twice the gas mileage of Prius!
Since our small fleet consists of my EVO and Mrs Jim In Tucson's Prius, I feel qualified to make this test.
This is an apples to apples comparison of our 2nd generation Prius bought new in 2004 with my '03 EVO VIII bought used in 2006. Both cars are used for the same type of in-town driving, lots of short errands, etc . My wife's office is in our home and my office is just three miles down the street. Neither of us use the freeway.
Wifey consistently averages 47mpg in the Prius. Bone stock. Silver-the fastest color! No mods. Wingless.
My '03 EVO VIII... Silver-the fastest color! A few mods. Wingless. ...was switched to E85 in July '08. Since then it averages a fairly consistent 13.9 mpg.
Whoa, you're saying. Jim, that does not sound better than the Prius.
Think about it. Title says "gas" mileage, not fuel mileage. Remember, E85 is only 15% gas and 85% renewable ethanol.
You need 6.66 gals of E85 to have one gallon of gasoline. So, my EVO is getting 93 miles out of every gallon of gasoline.
Just in case the numbers are not clicking, I've attached a simple spreadsheet showing both cars side-by-side on a 470 mile drive around Tucson.
Prius = 47 mpg of gasoline
E85 EVO = 93 mpg of gasoline
The moral of the story: you can drive a fast car and still make a small carbon footprint.
So, next time you see someone in a Prius, stick your head out the window and yell at them to stop wasting gas and buy an EVO!

i am currently getting like 250 miles to the tank on about 11.5 galons.
i will certainly miss that part.

this will apply to any vehicle that runs e85; now think about it, you are spending more money on gas, b/c what you paid for a gallon of e85 only 15% are gasoline. let's say a gallong of e85 is $2.00, so you are paying $2.00 for just .15 gallon of gasoline?? I think you are getting ripped off.
run e85 in the prius, the "gas" and fuel mileage will be better than the evo!
this thread is not informative, it's just wording scheme, I am looking for ways to optimize fuel efficiency that's why I click on your thread.
gasoline is one type of fuel, even tho there are only 15% of gasoline content doesn't means you are only paying for fraction of price.

^MEOW^ The only thing I don't like about E-85 is that it requires alot more to fuel to produce the same amount of energy as gasoline. so using E-85 in the end you use more fuel which requires more fill ups. This really sucks more fillups, means more money at the pump unless they sell it for dirt cheap? But for us tuners it's great! E85 is 105 Octane!
lol, wow, what interesting analysis. i would've never guessed.
" "gas" mileage, not fuel mileage. Remember, E85 is only 15% gas and 85% renewable ethanol."
i guess when you get into semantics, the truth is right in front of our faces.

I view E-85 as a cheaper way of running race fuel. When Iget my car tuned for it then I will run E-85 if iwant an Xtra boost in power for a while. Otherwise if I'm just commuting (Which i plan to do very little of in this car), I will run good old 93 octane.
I am in Tucson as well and am on e85 for the street. The car is running around 650whp on a mustang at the moment. I havent had the chance to meet you Jim but you def seem to know a lot about e85. I switched over to e85 about a month ago and I havent looked back!

You haven't missed much. I'm just a grumpy old man that likes fast cars. Let me know when you can meet up. I live and work on the NW side. Since the health-care industry is still waiting for our bailout, I'm only working 4 days a week; I'm off every Wednesday, if that works.
Sorry for the thread jack. Hey, its my thread! Never mind.

I used this argument when i made the switch last year with a prius driving friend of mine. Told him i was getting just over 100miles per gallon of gasoline in my car. The look on his face when i explained it to him was priceless...
