Still no luck tracking any of this stuff down. I've been in touch with Shell - the owner of Gumout - but they could not tell me which if any local retail outlets carry the Flex-Fuel Injector Cleaner.

They did put me onto the Arizona distributors, so we'll see if thats me get a response.

I've not given up

Gumout Flex-Fuel Vehicle Fuel Injector Cleaner

In fact, all of the local auto parts stores I visited sell the Gumout line, but none had even heard of the Injector Cleaner for Flex-Fuel Vehicles.

Has anyone been able to find this? Has anyone looked? Would any fuel injector cleaner product be just as good?

Rislone fuel injector cleaner states it is good for gas, diesel, and E85. So, can I conclude that all injector cleaners are pretty much the same?

I sent an email to the Gumout customer service listed on their website. The reply said that the product had been discontinued.

That's certainly possible, although it makes no sense considering that there are more Flex-Fuel vehicles produced each year. And a lot of new Flex-Fuel vehicles are planned in coming years.

Below is my email exchange with Shell from last Friday.

I'm trying to buy some of your Fuel Injector cleaner for Flex-Fuel engines, but I can't find it anywhere locally. So, I thought I'd simply order it online, but I can't find it online either.

Please point me to a Tucson source that carries the Flex-Fuel Injector Cleaner or an online business that sells it.

Thanks,
Jim in Tucson

Saw this and thought it was interesting. I wonder if a different oil could help?

Sorry guys. I attached it here.

Which Motor Oil Is Best for Engines Using E85 Fuel

Question:
Which Motor Oil Is Best for Engines Using E85 Fuel
I am using E85 fuel in a converted Honda engine originally not designed for its use. One of the primary concerns of this is the formic acid created in the event of water contamination of the fuel. I have always used Mobil 1 5W-20, but am wondering if Mobil Clean or Extended Performance would be a better choice for me. What Mobil oil has the greatest amount of acid neutralizers in it?
-- Andrew Champion, Frisco, CO

Answer:
We recommend you use a heavy duty diesel product if you want additional acid neutralizer. We recommend you try Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 as it is based on HD diesel technology, which contains additional over-based detergents for acid neutralization.

Actually the diesel oils are pretty good. I know Jack (Jacks Transmission) likes running Rotella in his DSM's. Has more lubricating properties. There's also a Hot Rod article which suggest running a diesel oil in a flat tappet cam engine since it lubricates better than the newer oils.

I thought it was interesting about the oil and the acid issue but I'm not sure if it would help the black tar issue.

Maybe I should have opened a new thread for this question.
+1 anyone care to chime in on what they do with map switching w/ tephra?

I run the tank down to mostly empty of whichever fuel I have, fill, and switch. I definitely don't bother purging the tank via the FPR return or anything like that. Fuel trims can accommodate small changes in ethanol content, just not large swings from 10% (E10) to 85% (E85).
