Correct. Are you familiar with the differences between the D2XX driver and the virtual serial port driver? There's already a VCP driver for Mac that works, but flashing requires more than tty support. There's also this:

I haven't written any OS X drivers, but I know the linux side pretty well. I you want to take a crack at it let me know.

Regarding some of the other comments - I think that you ideally want to expose D2XX functionality. Through a VCP port you can get basic functionality (RTS to toggle UART between K & L, DTR to control the alternate, etc.), but D2XX gives some controls that might not otherwise be available. For example, I believe that on the 1.3 cable some voltage controls are on some GPIO pins on the FTDI chip.

I probably would be running linux on my laptop if I knew all the software for flashing and logging was working. I don't particularly care for windoze but being my job is primarily developing and analyzing data for the Wintel platform, I'm stuck immersed in it.

Well it seems that interest in this is rekindled for real. I took a few hours this morning and wrote a simple psuedo device driver for OS X. I have to say, the IOKit is pretty easy to work with -- although I've long avoided it in my userspace applications.
At the moment, my version of XCode needs a major update. I could take up to day to download the update over my slow home connection. We're snowed in AGAIN here in New Mexico, so I can't get to the nice OC3 in my office.

Well according to this, there is a very early D2xx build available for Mac.

EDIT: simple tests indicate that it works too.
EDIT2: simple tests like

[donour@ychmhn ~/src/D2XX/Samples/SetVIDPID]$ ./setVIDPID
Device 0 Serial Number - OpenPort 1.3 Mitsubishi

fascinating. i don't know jack about this but have always wondered if i could use ECUFlash somehow on a Macbook Pro since I want to buy one and don't want to buy a old, cheap POS PClaptop just for tuning. I was wondering about Parallels too, but it is not very reliable/stable?
